Vegas 19 HEVC not working, immediate crash

Benedek-Jakab wrote on 11/22/2025, 8:12 AM

Hey guys,
I need some help.

I'm using Vegas 19 and it looks like it's not supporting HEVC formats. Once I use it in my project and start working with it, it immediately crashes, without any error code. But when I open in the Windows Media Player, it works - since I bought the HEVC codec (I'm using Windows 11).

Please help, I have to work with that format.

Thanks!

I tried to use HEVC in a blank project, a 10 sec long video. It does not load in, the audio is playing, the whole editor is lagging and is slow. If I do that in a more complex project, with more than 2-3 videos, it immediately crashes without any notice or error code.

@Benedek-Jakab VP19 wasn't good for HEVC, major changes to Vegas in VP21 (300) improved working with HEVC significantly.

For you try right clicking in the Project Media tab - Create Proxies, & change the preview window to Preview (Good or Half).

Or recode your video to MP4 AVC from MP4 HEVC before loading it into Vegas.

Thanks. I tried again, and now it does not load in :DDDDD I can't open it, it's not responding.

19 supported HEVC though how well it decodes can depend on which GPU you have. With an Intel iGPU it worked okay for me. With NVIDIA it was less reliable.

Not loading at all is surprising though. Could you share a sample of your HEVC or at least MediaInfo for it?

I have an Intel Arch B580, which I hope is suitable for that work.

I tried many type of HEVCs, from iPhones, from DJI devices, etc.

This is the one, that crashed too bad, even can't open Vegas :D

@Benedek-Jakab DJI file problems have been mentioned on here in the past, I don't remember why exactly, I also don't know enough about 10bit but I do know it can be problematic or harder to work with 🤷‍♂️, as mentioned HEVC in VP19 isn't without problems & UHD (3840x2160) is more stressful on your PC compared to a FHD (1920x1080) file. . So working with DJI 10bit HEVC UHD sounds like a disaster (disaster is prob a bit too hard of a description but that's how the saying goes 😉)

PS. Intel Arc has had it's issues which were or weren't resolved in later versions of VP after VP19. Then there's the combination of Windows 11 + the older VP19 to consider..

Okay, so what's the solution here? Other than encoding it to H264 - tried it, the video is laggy in the editor
