Vegas 4.0 Hanging Machine

I am new to Vegas and Sound Forge. I have a 2 hour movie (from VHS) that I am trying to edit. Every time I try to open it, in either Vegas or Sound Forge, the software freezes the machine while building peak sound values. Freeze means it takes a hard reboot to get it going again.

The machine is a 2.66 Ghz with 512MB of memory.

Does anyone have any suggestions for reading and processing this file?

Several things you can try. Right click on the file in Vegas Explorer and once its over the timeline drop, then select audio only add across time. That should prevent the audio portion from loading. You'd do this to see if its really a audio problem. If the video portion loads and play OK, it could be.

You also can disable peak building: options/preferences/audio tab

I would also see if another application has trouble with it. Like Virtual Dub. Its free and comes in very handy. If you have the disk space you can use Virtual Dub to make a fresh AVI copy. If there is some corruption in the file, VD will probably have trouble too. If that's the case several utilites that can repair the file (vcd or DVDhelp.com)
