Vegas 4.0e audio tracks not sync'd

Newbie here. I've been searching the archives to no avail, so sorry if I am asking a repeat question. When I record a new track of vocals or guitar over my base piano tracks, they are offset in time by seconds. Completely out of sync!
I can physically scoot them over to align the multiple tracks, but that is useless if I am paying a musician to sit while I do that before each little playback or part recording.
I have Vegas 4.0e, using audio only. Please tell me step by step what to adjust and where to find it. Thank you so much for your help and advice!
J
All I found in the archives is upgrading to 4.0d. I am running my mics through M-Audio duo preamp & mic connect. Onboard soundcard. Also have a soundblaster soundcard. XP pro, P4, 2 hard drives, lots of memory etc.

..Try to record and playback over the same "sound-device" ...you 're bound to get syncing/line-up problems if you use :

-recording over device 1 and while playing back over device 2
-the onboard soundcard
-consumer cards like the soundblaster.

YMMV,ofcourse. For example I have pretty good sync between my Audiophile and Terratec DMX XFire 1024 if I record them simultaniously, but I don't make a habit of that.
I mostly use my Audiophile to record while playing back over that same device.

And,indeed, there are quite a couple of topics/treads here concerning the problems with onboard sound/soundblasters and the like.

Thank you Gerard. I think I am using the same device for both, but frankly with 3 devices installed I am not really sure. I'll check into that.

I know I saw something earlier about this syncing and a setting we could adjust, but now that I need it, I searched forever and couldn't find any references to this kind of sync prob.
Thanks again.

..You can check if you playback tru the same device as you record with tru the bus(ses).Click on the output assign button to route them properly.Otherwise it can be a driver issue, buffer setting or background services that gets in the way or,or,or.....or whatnot.
