Vegas 4 loves dual processors. I did a test pent4 against a dual pent3. Read on.

Ok the two machines are as follows running win 2000 on both.
1#
ASUS p4pe Pent 4 intel 2.53ghz, 2x512 ddr333vs 2700cor ram,2 hds maxtor diamond and deskstar 80.

2#
ASUS cuv4 dual mobo, 2 pent 3 intel 1 gig cpus, 768 of ram, hs maxtor diamond and deskstar 80. DESKSTAR??!! OH MY GOD!!!Yes these deskstar work just fine. These were made in 2001.Matter of fact I have had one for acouple o years longer than these and no probs.

OK the media was a project that I was loading down pretty good. Cross fades transitions audio and some files at diff audio settings as well(44/48).
27 tracks total! Footage straight from a canon gl1 dv cam. Also 2 waves plugs(PIGS on the cpu).

First I chose a small loop of 8 seconds from the 27 tracks to selectively prerender as an avi dv ntsc.
The pent 4 came up ith 35 seconds to prerender.
The dual came up at 1 min and 5 seconds.
Abit of a diff here.

Then I decided to setup 30 tracks of the same audio file to see what I get on the cpu performance tab in task manager.

Pent 4 @ 30 tracks of audio came up a fluctuating but somewhat steady 8% of cpu usage.
Dual came in fluctuating between 8-11%. Not bad of a diff between the two from where I come from in the audio field.

This is where the dual shined with vegas 4 and makes me stick to a dual over the pent 4.
25 tracks of dv footage. Just copied this one vid file 25 times.
Dual came in fluctuating 8-11% cpu usage and showed that it was using both cpus for this task,
Pent 4 came in at a steady 24%!!!! Yes 24%! WOW
That is a hell of a diff when running a big load of vid. As a matter of fact I can bog down the cpu on the pent 4 at one point of the 27 track project 100%.
On the dual at same point I get 58%

Does vegas utilize dual? Yes!
I have been a beta tester for audio companies for a long time and I do know my audio machines. Video was another story. As with any system we always tried to make sure our cpu usage was low by trying various hardware and drivers until we cam up with a positive machine. Never store bought. Always studio built.
So this is why I post so many questions to see what everyone is running to try as many as I can for the best performance.

My dual asus now I think out of production for awhile, is a prime candidate for video in our production department. Yes it evens has a VIA chipset in it. There is two against the grain now, a deskstar and a via chipset.
It takes time to get the best machine you can run but if you really pay attention to those posts on the forums and then get your feet wet by trying diff mobos, etc. You will be surprised at what you can find.
Dual no super pipe threading, but just as fast and can hold a better video load than a pent 4 from where I stand. If your doing video work or graphic work then look at a dual.Or get a pent 4 for it's faster rendering, again not a huge diff. Mere seconds, but to some this is alot so good luck to all.
I just thought this info might be of an interest to all who care to read.

Thanx for being agreat forum and happy videos. ; )

You seem to be focusing mainly on CPU useage. Why?

Do this simple test:

Take the same project, load in both machines.

Report RENDER times for each.

Once done, caculate the percentage one over the other.

Great info, i wanted to agree with you on all points, I have 2 computers, a P4 and my main system is my dual amd atholon MP's run on the A7m266d board. It uses both a Northbridge and Southbridge chipset. I ran simular test but i failed to check cpu usage, i just compared actual times for render and your right, the P4 is fast but running dual can't be beat i can render one hour of dv footage in about 35 to 40 min using the dual. I do side jobs and believe me the time i save makes me money. I am admititly a newer user of Vegas and am sure there are things i could try to test performance even more so if you have any more suggestions, please post as well.
