VEGAS 4 --> mpeg

We are editing a video that we 'Cookie Cut' in a talking head shot. There are about 5 of these talking head shots in the 3minute video. We replace 2 of these shots so as to 'customize' it for our customers. We then render to mpeg1 and put it on a business card CD.

We notice that the talking head shots that stay in the video are nice & clean but the new shots that we edit in are 'cartoonish' looking in comparison. Sometimes the colors are exagerated. The picture is not as sharp. The shots are way brighter than they looked on the timeline.

All video was shot on XL1 - PD150 - DVX100/24P.
If you would like to see the video for reference, let me know. I will upload it and give you guys the URL.

At current we edit and render to mpeg1 via the VCD preset. Should we be rendering to Full Frame/Resolution AVI then encoding with CleanerXL to mpeg1? Or render to NTSC DV preset then encode to mpeg1? Or is it cool to render directly to mpeg1 from the project timeline?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance,
Lamont

Cleaner, Squeeze, and Ulead's tools all do better renders to MPEG1 than Vegas does. Vegas was faced with a choice of optimizing for MPEG1 or 2, and obviously, MPEG2 was the choice. So, you'll find several tools that do a better job for MPEG1.

Excellent. Thanks for the response SPOT. - By the way... Your book has really helped my company step up our productions. Thank you for that also.

Now that I know to use Cleaner for my final MPEG encoding, what should my VEGAS output be? Should I use the AVI Uncompressed or DV NTSC? Or are they basically the same thing?

I've done experiments and cannot tell a quality difference in the two but I know that some of you have been doing this for years and have knowledge far beyond my few years. I respect all thoughts and opinions and they are all appreciated.
