You can have the best of both worlds by right clicking on the part(s) you want to sweeten, choose "Open copy in Sound Forge" (note...open a COPY, not the original), tweak it in SF, save and exit SF, and it should put you back in Vegas. It will return what you changed in SF as a "Take". You can then toggle between the original and the tweaked version with the "T" key. You can have multiple takes for the same part too.

If you have a completed Vegas project that you want to tweak in SF, say a completed tune that you want to run through Wave Hammer or overall EQ, then yes, you will need to render your project to something SF can open (wave file) and then open it in SF. But to sweeten individual tracks/files within a project, use Takes as described above.

If you wondering whether you can open a Vegas project file in SF, I don't think you can. I can't confirm this though, as I am not at my home studio PC.

Good luck!

You can not open a vegas (.veg) file in sound forge. Do as mentioned above by gettig.

For sweetening and overall mix in vegas I have been using the Master effects and creating a chain of graphic EQ and Wave Hammer before rendering. I figured this accomplished the same thing as rendering a mix then applying final FX. Am I wrong in doing it this way?

What are some other thoughts on this?

Generally speaking mastering is the loudness and EQ relationship across all the tracks of a CD/album, so if you are applying final compression and EQ on individual songs in Vegas' Master bus or in Sound Forge you will not be accomplishing the above.
