Vegas 4: Weird dropped frame issue

I am having a strange problem related to how dropped frames are being reported and/or handled in Vegas4.0e.

My equipment:

AMD Athlon Xp 2600+ / Windows XP SP2 / Adaptec firewire card
Vegas 4.0e
Digital8 camera: Sony TRV-480
DV Camera: Sony TRV-27

I have captured 30-40 hours of DV video successfully using this hardware (i.e. no dropped frames). Every once in a while, I get dropped frames while capturing DV, and when I do Vegas capture reports them on the main window while capturing and also on the dialog box that comes up after capture. Also, when I bring the resulting files into VirtualDub (very handy for finding out where the dropped frames are), it finds the dropped frames. When I look in the same spot in Vegas, the audio is still there, and the last captured video frame is repeated.

Recently I purchased the TRV480 to capture/archive all my old 8mm footage. When I capture from that camera, at times Vegas capture will report dropped frames while it is capturing, but when the dialog comes up after capture, it reports no dropped frames, and VirtualDub can find no dropped frames. When I bring the clip into Vegas, the frames are not there (I can compare it to another capture of the same clip that didn’t have any dropped frames in that area), and neither is the video.

Any ideas why the dropped frames are apparently handled differently between the two cameras?

Please don’t turn this into a discussion about the causes of dropped frames – I am in the process of solving this problem and there is already plenty of information on where to look.
