Vegas 5.0 & beyond - its SO SIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tadpole wrote on 1/17/2003, 10:46 PM

seen lots of praises and lots of flack out there about the new features included in 4.0

WHY not make it simple?
Instead of having a few sofo marketing-types sit behind close doors and discuss which features are the most important & should be added to the next release...

WHY NOT ASK us!!!?? the users (ya know, the people that give you the money??)

i'm not talking about getting a general consensus from board posting, i'm saying like add a page to your website where registered users VOTE on features they want.

Show a running tab of the results so users know the ranking and can discuss the pros/cons .. maybe even convince users to change their vote...
Democracy works..

(oh, and BAH-humbug if you worried about the 'competition' knowing what you are going to be working on... the loyalty amongst users for doing such a thing will create the cult-like following that will insure your success)

ps- of course i'm one of those that didn't get what i wanted in 4.0, 4 channel audio capture/print :(
4.0 features are nice, but not worth the price for a wedding videographer like me (& the rest of HUGE part of your market i'm sure) - brides could give a rats-behind about 12bit 32khz vs 16-bit 48khz - they JUST WANT TO HEAR their vows, only possible through wireless mic on 2nd channel........... AND.. no, i refuse to recapture in wav format for channel 2 or mess with another app (like scenealzer) to do so....

so 4.0 isn't for me.......... EXCEPT if i want DVD architect since you can only get it by purchasing 4.0!!... absolutely diabolical.. Microsoft move - but can't blame ya (it will bring in the $$)... but its not going make me love u...
omg...
i started to ramble... sorry...

just my 48,997 cents........

Well obviously you aren't aware of the feature on this site that allows one to request additional features on future versions---And Sonic is always responsive to what their customers ask for---4.0 is proof---I asked for faster scrubbing--we got faster scrubbing---many asked for color correction a la FCP and Avid--we got a kick ass color correction set up---many asked for an improved bin set up---we got an improved bin set up---and so on---We also got lots of neat features that most of us didn't even dream of-----?This is a great update and I think the guys and gals at Sonic did a fantastic job---Thanks so much!

You know Rex, I think we'll keep seeing sleepers from other manufacturers showing up pointing out what Vegas doesn't still do, as opposed to seeing what it does. Wonder where Tadpole has been for the past year when SOFO has posted repeatedly, "What do you want in Vegas4?"
And as far as the audio at a wedding, what in the world are you referring to? You are running 4 inputs? Or 2 stereo? Because you can always record one mic on channel one Right, and one mic on channel 1 Left. That's how the pros do it anyway. Stereo voice is silly, a waste of space on the tape, and usually less usable. And it sounds a whole lot better when you run mono for each channel anyway. AND it's 16bit/48K

Who left the door open again?

Tadpole, if you were paying attention, obviously you haven't been or you just stumbled in here (that open door) you would have known that SoFo has one of the most friendly forums where the people that actually write the applications respond to questions and accept suggestions constantly. They even ask for suggestions on how to improve the next version and on top of all that they have a web based form your can fill out to make more suggestions and... oh somebody shut the door! Grrrrr.
tadpole wrote on 1/17/2003, 11:36 PM
like i mentioned, yes i am aware of the suggestion box -
i was looking for a voting mechanism with published results..

ya know, like those sites with the "Brittney Spears.vs.Christina Agulara" polls??
=)

DON'T get me wrong rextill.. i'm not ripping on SoFo at all.. i think they have EXCELLENT customer response/support (although i did go off on a tangent at the end of my post - which i apologized for ;)

I'm just saying..... all those with other posting/issues with 4.0 (mostly the negative ones) - which i might or might not agree with...... could be avoided if users knew where they were going to get ahead of time....
then no one could complain - after all, its what "we" asked for.

you use "we got this" and "we got that"...cuz you got what 'you' wanted, but "i" didn't get what i wanted... (not at ALL saying the features added are not great)

if i'm the only one on the block that wanted 4 channel audio capture... then i don't expect sofo to tailor its software for me, and so be it, & i shall not register any complaints...but how do you quantify that vegas users got what they wanted? really can't... nor can sofo .. even if they counted the entries in their submission box (cuz if its not openly published, some might not register their vote)

wouldn't an open vote be the best option? (particularly for a business which success is based on units sold)
that's all i'm saying....

tadpole wrote on 1/18/2003, 12:09 AM
spot - for the record. I use channel one for ambient (stereo)
2nd channel - i have 2 discrete wireless channels, 1 for bride, 1 for groom

and not a sleeper! i love vegas/sofo!
been telling those FCP/avid users to pound sand for years!!!

My consideration that bundling sofos DVD with vegas is "diabolical", well it Is... BUT, like i said, its a VERY smart business move (as it forces those looking for DVD authoring solution to be foreced to discover the wonderful bliss that is editing video in vegas...).. its just not WWJD pratice.. wish sofo would give previous vv3.0 users (with a low budget) a chance to just buy DVD architect??
please???
(maybe its to integreted with v4.0, i dunno)

be nice to ditch that KRAPass Ulead software/support!!

i love vegas guys!! don't get me wrong!!!
LOVE THIS BOARD TOO!
sometimes i need to be set straight & i have no problem opening up to criticism

(oh, and like u i don't like all the complaining about 4.0, that's why i suggested the vote page - i just used my ONE grip as an example)

. . . . . (squeak . . .. squeak . . . ) . . Just upgraded to VV3 from VF. . . . You know what I'd like in VV3 . . . . "S"plit clip when the clip rolls . . . . simple as that . . . . nothing more, nothing less . .. .

Working with any GUI over the past 10 years, my paradise is always trying to find ways in making THAT s/w package work for me - yes? Could be WORD, Excel, PowerPoint etc etc - VF or VV3 gets the same approach from me. I want simple, intuitive and FUNCTIONING functions. - Now how do I/we feed that back to the decision makers and techies? Yes it could be a poll - that would equate to a democratic process - is it the best way to "influence" R&D? Not sure. This IS a very interesting discussion. It is also timely, on the heels of an upgrade to our "beloved" Vegas, that we continue in this fashion. Maybe, just maybe, SoFo Exects get to be informed as to how this s/w is being regarded by the user base - I would hope so . . ..

Like I say . . . "S"plit clip option while previewing - If it's there, big apologies. If not, change my s/w to do it please. I'm on broadband - I can suffer a small patch to change the code. Hey this is happening all the time to other s/w.

Hey ho . . .

Grazie

Interesting discussion, but I don't believe a "new features" voting pole on a forum would be an accurate representation of all Vegas users. I'd venture to say that most Vegas users are not active participants and that only a small minority of users would actually bother to input suggestions and/or vote for them. The functionality of Vegas 3 and now Vegas 4 leads me to believe the folks at SOFO do indeed listen to their users and implement the feature sets that they believe to be most usefull the the majority of users. And the fact is, they have managed to add new and exciting features without the stability problems that plague so many of the competing NLE's on the market.....this is no small feat and one that I am personally very greatfull of.

@Grazie
You don't "S"plit, you just do "M"ark with vegas while rolling. So you can adjust for your reaction time when actually splitting.

DOOOOOAH . . . Yes Alex, that's what I've been doing in VF too! So that's it's funtionality - it will give me more time when I come to review the markers. Presently markers range from 1 - 0 - nothing beyond "0" I presume?

Cheers,

Grazie, Splitting Clips while playbacking and previewing - this works perfect in Vegas 4!

The ability to split while playing will reall speed up work involving multi-cam edits. :)

Okay Guys! - I've JUST upgraded from VF to VV3 - Give us a break! - Mind you real speed splitting - mmmhhhh nice as cream!

Now - where did I put my bank manager's phone number?

Hey, Grazie, congrats on the upgrade! Now you can do some real work!

No hard feelings Tadpole---sorry if it appeared as if I was jumping on you----I think that it is very hard to think about what the best way to change a program based on consumer need at this point in time---
stusy wrote on 1/18/2003, 9:32 AM
Welll...I guess it is time to move on...VV3.0c is being touted as the last version of 3 as far as I can see...ya, my limited perusal means NOTHING, in fact there are those that push it away as being negatory, and no, I have no suggestions to make it better commiserate with the people in the know who WOULD know what more could be done within the confines of policy, the bottom line being profit power and doing more with less, which is as it is these days...likely I would never know the right questions to ask anyway, and count on those that do or would know how this would dance with a prosumer like me who is just interested in doing song demos and the audio macro vegas provides...hence SF6, acidpro4, nr2, batchconv5, cda5...hey, I'm probably in overkill now anyway...why the hell bother anymore posting anything...philosophy and semantics be damned...! can't find anything wrong with those other products I have either, just would be fun to make them more powerful and a snap to use.....
wcoxe1 wrote on 1/18/2003, 9:50 AM
Looks to me like they did take a vote, on several occasions, accepted the input, and went with it. Nice job, too.

The main thing wrong with those "Poll" sites that show the results is a thing commonly known among political consultants as "Getting on the Bandwagon." Polls actually influence the voting pattern, and are NOTORIOUSLY Inaccurate. I actually suggest that SoFo NEVER disclose the results of polls or suggestions. It keeps them more accurate.

"just would be fun to make them more powerful and a snap to use....."

What else out there is easier to use than SoFo products??

"Now you can do some real work!" - Paul, thanks for the support. VV3 is amazingly feature rich - Y'know Paul I might even take your advice and "review" my Wembley Tribute. Oh yes, nearly forgot, thanks too for your "feedback" on the CODEC9.

Yours Transparently,

Grazie
Paul_Holmes wrote on 1/18/2003, 10:36 AM
Well, I have XP and I don't know if that makes any difference. I haven't had any problem with the codec. I downloaded Microsoft's encoder, make an avi file of the movie I want to stream, then run it through the Microsoft encoder. Works real slick!
murk wrote on 1/18/2003, 12:10 PM
Get an ASIO device such as the M- Audio Delta1010 (or one of the lesser models). Vegas 4.0 has built in ASIO support so you can assign 4 audio inputs to 4 tracks and record to your hearts content.
stusy wrote on 1/18/2003, 4:57 PM
Could be wrong on this, but if you JUST got VV3 or upgraded to it, you may be in line for some MAJOR savings if you decided to go with VV4, maybe even get it for free, IF you qualify, but only the VV4, not the offering w/DVD architect...check with 'em...!!
Control_Z wrote on 1/18/2003, 7:14 PM
You aren't the only one wanting 4 channel capture. But the DV spec includes 4 channels so if Vegas 4 isn't DV compatable they should point that out up front.
