vegas 5 crashing with large .AVI?

I have a 58 minute .avi clip that I need to work with - whenever I pull it into the Vegas - it either freezes, does not build audio peaks or both. Should I be pulling smaller clips onto the timeline and then combining them later for rendering? I believe my hardware specs are fine ( 1gig ram, 2.6 processor, separate hard drive) Thanks in advance for your help. Probably a newbie question, but this is the best forum out there for answers...

What's your file system? Fat32 or NTFS? Did you try to play it in Win Media Player? How did you capture it?

It should not be related to hardware btw.

i captured it with i'mtoo DVD Ripper. do you suggest maybe ripping into an mpeg2 than rendering it to .avi in Vegas?
