Vegas 5 hangs on start-up

I really don't know where to start or what to explain. And I did a Search but came up nothing.

I've had Vegas 3, 4 and now 5 on this machine and they've all worked perfectly... til today. After some minor housecleaning by eliminating a few old non-related files/folders (Office products, a game or two, etc), I was ready to get back to some editing, but V5 refused to open. I'd get the orange intro-screen and then it would just hang. Have to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to get it to release.

After poking around, I found that if I open Windows Explorer (even the top-layer) first and then V5 it'll fire right up. Also found that I do not have any control over pc-sound when V5 is on-screen, but if I minimize V5 I can change volume. Uninstall/reinstall didn't change anything either.

Watching Task Manager when V5 is hung, I see that I bump up to 100% CPU, where otherwise it's 2-3%. I have Page-File set to 764M, so I don't think that's it (?). I've tried it with all my virus/spyware stuff (Zone Alarm Security, SpyBot, Ad-Aware, etc) turned on and turned off, but no difference. Oh yeah, and V3, V4, DVDArchitect 1 & 2 all continue to work just fine!

It's a HP760 desktop with XP and SP1. 512 RAM, 120G harddrive.

Where do I start digging? I'm completely baffled by this one and don't even know what to delete or add. I'd like to think I have other options than a complete reinstall of everything, but at this point.......

TIA,
Ron

It sounds like you deleted something that Vegas needs.

Can you do a "system restore"?

Try holding control-shift when you start Vegas to restore defaults.

click start/run/ sfc /scannow to let windows look for missing or corrupt system files.
