Vegas 5 hangs while rendering mpeg 2

I'm trying to encode an avi and an mp3 audio file to mpeg2 using the MainConcept encoder that comes with Vegas 5.

It's hard enough trying to figure out the settings for this codec without any documentation, but worst of all it hangs the program. Whenever I chose a steady bitrate rather than variable, it simply freezes either a few frames into the render or at a later interval. Also, certain audio settings cause an error immediately after rendering starts.

I just got the program the other day and have spent the last 2 days fighting with the codec to try and encode my files for broadcast. Needless to say this has been extremely frustrating.

Any help on this would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks.

mpeg2 for broadcast ?

anyway -- from what source ist your avi and what codec is it using? Tthere are about 50 types of avi's.

if its something you downloaded (i suspect it might be if it is mp3 audio) , you have to scan for bad frames often first , with virtualdub .. in fact - you may want to scan for bad frames AND covert the file to dv in virtualdub ...

if the mp3 is VBR , vegas MIGHT have a problem with it --

the standard templates in vegas for mpeg2 are perfectly fine to start with -- there are not a lot of settings to know about and what there are are covered using tool tips very well ... The documentation with vegas is very good btw -

really, most of the time , just set the bit rate is about the extent of it ....

Hi, thanks for the reply.
The avi is encoded with the Mainconcept DV codec. The mp3 is single bitrate.
I've been told to encode at 4mbps mpeg 2, audio at 48 kbps 48 kbps.

Now, I am not familar with mpeg2 encoding at all, so I am not too sure what settings I have to use to get a 4mbps file, but most of my trying has resulted in the program freezing.

An MPEG encoding overview can be found here: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=391

If you need an MPEG file for broadcast, please ask the facility that needs the file for the EXACT MPEG parameters the require- there's a tremendous variety of possible settings in our encoder and probably only one correct combination.
