Vegas(6)/SoundForgeScript: OutOfTheQuestion?

kentwolf wrote on 12/1/2005, 9:32 AM
Is there such a thing as a script that would take each audio event in Vegas, then nornalize each event in Sound Forge(8)..thus having each Vegas timeline event with a Take 2, normalized audio event?

Is this even possible?

This would be a HUGE timesaver for me if there were such a thing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Yes. Since both Vegas and Sound Forge 8 have scripting capabilities, it should be possible to write such a script.

You can select all the audio events then normalize them all at once, or are you wanting to use Average RMS power rather than Peak level?

How could I accomplish that?

Sound Forge defaut for voice -10 dB RMS.

Thanks!

For all events in the same audio track:

Right click the first event > Select Events to End.

They are all now highlighted.

Right click on the first (or any one I guess) and Right Click > Switches > Normalize.

Wow! I never knew that.

I was taking each and every event into Sound Forge. Works, but it takes awhile.

Just goes to show, there's always something to learn.

Thanks!

Although Vegas can normalize on the peaks, it's best to normalize on the average RMS value. However, it's also potentially more damaging if you don't pay attention to what you're doing. Sound Forge can normalize either on the peak value or RMS value. Peak value is easy.
Normalizing in Vegsa only allows peak value.
In Forge, set the value to -20 or -18dB and you'll be most happy, most likely.
This is one feature of Forge that I wish Vegas had. A script to export from Vegas to Forge, normalizing at XX RMS average value, would be wonderful. However, not everyone has Sound Forge. This is one major incentive alone, to owning Forge, IMO. Maybe that's why Sony hasn't offered this in Vegas.
