Vegas 6 won't render

Well done Yoyodyne. Nice feeling when things work out.
Unfortunately for me, the problem occurs on both PCs where one is a clean install with Vegas only.

Thanks Mehash - wish I could offer more info. It looks like we might be the point guys for a larger issue...

The only way I could fix it was to reformat my C: partition and do a complete re-install of Xp. I tried a repair install and no luck - right now this system has ONLY XP Pro, all the friggin updates, & Vegas 6 on it. So far it seems to be working great with a good mpeg 2 render test. Haven't had time to try every possible combo of stuff but so far seems solid.

Followup: As I run the same thing in Vegas 4.0e, I can render at 5, 10 and 30 minutes. No problems. No XP reinstall for me :)

Well, I tried re-rendering my project in V5d just to make sure it was something wrong with my project. It rendered fine....on the same machine. I tried the copy/paste into V6...render crash. I tried importing the vegas project rather than opening it....render crash. I've tried a selective render of the project (loop regioned the whole thing).....render crash. It's consistantly crashing at about 5200 frames give or take. It doesn't seem to matter whether I render to AVI, MPEG2, MPEG1, etc. Tech support suggested deleting the shared plug-ins folder and re-installing....no help. I've updated my BIOS, and all drivers are current. Changing from VBR to CBR doesn't change anything.

I will say this.....the part that renders, does so at about twice the speed as in V5 (on a Dual Xeon P4 3.4 with 4G ram).

I really can't think of anything else to try short of re-installing XP Pro, which I don't want to do if I don't have to.

Can anyone think of anything else? Tech support hasn't been able to come up with an answer as of yet.

Thanks for any help.

Just a suggestion . Have you tried reducing your rendering threads in preferences/video/maximum number of rendering threads?Seems I read people were getting different results buy reducing number.Don't recall if it was preventing crashes.

I took it from 4 to 2 with the same result. I am not running the hyperthreading on my machine. Same result. I think I must be cursed!

Thank you for the suggestion.

I am not a networking expert by any stretch of the imagination, but there is something else odd about my workstation. It is connected to my home network (I can get internet connection, though I don't use the workstation for that).....but my other computers don't see it, and my workstation can't see my other two computers. I don't know how that could be related to my rendering problem, but who knows.

Have you tried rendering without audio?

Example, using the DVD Architect NTSC video stream template.
danceboysteve wrote on 4/22/2005, 1:22 AM
Yeah....tried that too. I'm wondering if my next step is to re-install windows.

I had rendering issues with my system because the MB was a piece of crab cake. The ram slots on the MB weren't working. Maybe it's a hardware issue. Check your ram or Video card. Do some stress tests on your ram chips.

just a suggestion.

Yeah....tried that too. I'm wondering if my next step is to re-install windows.
danceboysteve, have you had any success with your MPeg2 renders?

I have just installed V6.0a and I am getting the same error after 200Mb of render to MPEG2.
The symptoms are same in V5.0d and 6.0a.
I put a straight DV clip (6 minutes) on time line and render as DVD PAL.

If render as VBR then render's fine
If I render as CBR it crashes at around 200Mb ( 4.3 minutes)

I would hate reinstall windows!!

Mahesh - you tried another encoder? Maybe your MainConcept is crook? G

? Maybe your MainConcept is crook?
I do not know what you mean Grazie!!
How can I try another encoder?
Here's what I have done.
Uninstalled 5.0d. Deleted shared plug-ins directory. Reinstalled 5.0d. No Change. I can render VBR but not CBR.
Installed 6.0a. Same as 5.0d.
I see that I still have my old MPEG render templates in 5.0-d and 6.0a. I wonder where these templates are stored?

Vegas 5d ran without any problems(MPEG2) on this machine. But in Vegas 6a, I'm getting partial renders either in the 125MB range or 230 MB range. It has never successfully rendered the project all the way thru....and seems to be crashing consistently crashing at these two GENERAL points. I say general, because it doesn't crash at the same clip every time......just in the same general vicinity. I've also tried rendering to AVI, MPEG1, and QT (just for kicks), and get the same results. Obviously the files sizes are different with the different formats, but the program still stops at these two general areas. I again re-rendered the whole thing in V5d (MPEG2....best quality, as I'm using a lot of still pics with pan/zoom), and it renders without a hitch.

Does anyone have a magic wand ???
danceboysteve wrote on 4/23/2005, 11:49 PM
No, I haven't tried that. I'll try that now.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, but it's more like a magic shoe... try this incantation: abracadaSWIFTKICKDATBADBOY!
didn't work for me... but I'm near that route.

If it's haunted i would like the rights to the film version for the story, that is it a ghost not already under contract to William Morris.
If it's a nice spector we could option for 3 movies and bring out a Rockie kinda thing without all the hitting.
Best wishes,
Marty

At this point the only thing to do is laugh (and drink) until a fix comes out. I really can't think of anything else to try. Time for another drink!

This is getting interesting. I wish I was computer geek.
Further to my attempts to reinstall 5.0d:
I removed 5.0d and installed 5.0b. This would not render MPEG2.
So I removed 6.0a. Trial verion cannot be uninstalled. So I used the add/remove prog to remove 6.0a trial. Then I went into registry (GASP!).HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Sony media software and deleted MC MPEG Plugin directory. ( It's OK because I notice that Vegas messes with this during install puting the license details in)
I reinstalled 5.0a and now it renders.
I reinstalled 6.0a to check and now it does not have MPEG render as an option.

So I cannot test to see if 6.0a will work but atleast I am back to where I was 3 weeks ago.

It looks like vegas messes with registry on each install. I suspect it makes duplicate entries because I was watching the registry as v5 was fired up first time and noticed duplicate entries.

I shall have another go today. But I do need a clean running Vegas Tuesday morning.

Update:
Having tried to re-install 5.0d afew times, it appears that it would not render MPEG2-CBR, crashing at around 200Mb.
Same thing happens with 6.0a.

I have managed to get back to 5.0b. I needed to remove Mainconcept directory from the registry, re-enter the MC serial number for it to work.

What a palarwa!

I think I'm going to just bite the bullet and re-install windows. I have tried everything I can think of.

danceboysteve
I hope you succeed. I reinstalled w2k and still same problem.
danceboysteve wrote on 4/26/2005, 12:39 PM
Really??? Well, maybe I'll hold off on the reinstall. I wish someone from Sony would chime in here. I filed a tech problem with them DAYS ago. I'm sure they are busy, but I need help.

thanks,

I'd like to add that I am also having this same problem with Vegas 6. I primarily edit existing videos and render in the same format (AVI-AVI, MOV-MOV, WMV-WMV, etc.) and have problems with all of them. Vegas renders for a while and then completely freezes, usually in the 60-75 percent complete range. I must do Ctrl-Alt-Del and end the task. Usually, rendering a file immediately after a reboot will be successful, but now I am going back to Vegas 5 more often to get work done.
