It appears that Canon chose to go with Panasonic on H.264 High Profile for its version of AVCHD. As a result, Vegas 7 can't open the video files from the HG10, just as it can't any of the Panasonic AVCHD files. It's only been since May, SCS. When are you going to support manufacturer's other than Sony?
This is extremely disappointing to me. I am seriously considering the HG10 for my next purchase for a variety of reasons. If Vegas doesn't offer an editing solution for using this video, it will officially be the end of me using or buying anything (at all) with the Sony name. I'm just too tired of being left with useless gear because of the Sony insistence on only working with their own proprietary stuff. They have some nice products, but it's just not worth it.
If anyone knows a way to use this kind of video for editing within Vegas 7 (or a workaround), please advise.
I hope to buy a new camera in late October, and if I need to budget for a jump to a new editing platform as well, I'd like to know.
In defence of SCS... it's ridiculous how many formats (and variations of a format) are out there. (Like every manufacturer) They have limited development time and will try to prioritize what features they want to implement. Some formats take a while before NLE manufacturers start adopting them.
2- In the high-end world, the standard is to decode everything to SDI. High end editing systems support very few formats (most of HD SDI, SD SDI, TIFF, DPX, uncompressed QT/AVI). That's it. No DV, HDV, XDCAM, DV50, DV100, AVC HD, QT codecs, AVI codecs, etc. The onus is on the camera manufacturer to make a VTR that outputs SDI.
The NLE manufacturers will try to do their best to keep up but the inherent problem is that the camera manufacturers keep making cameras that shoot on different formats... hoping that the NLE manufacturers support them.
3- Even if they were to implement high profile AVC HD... would it be practical? It might be so slow that you're better off using the Cineform solution for it.
Vegas 8 has already been announced for display at IBC. It will only support Sony AVCHD.
Glenn, this is a no brainer. Canopus, Apple, Pinnacle, Ulead, MainConcept, Elecard, Nero and probably by this time others have incorporated support for the High Profile into their software. The Main Profile is old technology...just like Vegas.
