Vegas 7 + RED 4 = Generate Thumbnails?

[r]Evolution wrote on 5/13/2007, 12:50 PM
When I apply RED 4 as a filter in Vegas 7 and go to my Library Browser... I try to look at my Presets but they are all BLACK Squares w/ Circles in them.

I can click Generate Thumbnails and have them appear... but I have to do this for every category. This is not only time consuming but also frustrating because I have to click through every category of RED & Graffiti.

Is there a way to Generate all Thumbnails at once?

Yes, you can do them all at once. Begin with running Boris Red in STANDALONE mode, bring up the Library Browser, then at the very top level of the library tree click the Generate icon. It should complete in about 5 minutes or so depending on your hardware. If you ever have to regenerate them, type "U" (as in capital U), this will change the color of the generate icon so if you click on it you will Un-generate the thumbnails. After it has finished the task, you may then click the icon yet another time to regenerate them.

Note that if you do not run in standalone mode, you will not get the sample soccer ball (V1) or brick wall (V2) images. Furthermore, the process is much faster when Vegas is not running.

YEAH!... worked like a charm!

- I thought RED 4 could open and use the Graffiti 5 & Graffiti LTD library's too... but I guess not.

Thanks for the info on this one. It was a HUGE time & sanity saver.

Red browses its library by going to a "base" directory and merely listing all the files and sub-directories in a tree structure. Red can open any Boris file (Red, FX, or Graffiti) and can save in any of those formats as well. The only limitation is that I don't think it can open Blue files.

If you want to browse your other libraries, just copy or move them to the "base" directory that Red points to. However, I believe Red already has everything from both FX and Graffiti plus a lot more. Of course, anytime you add a new effect you must rebuild the missing thumbnails. Red is smart enough to rebuild only what it doesn't already have. To rebuild everything all over again, look at my previous post regarding the "U" command that is used to Ungenerate the thumbnails.

It appears that RED can see the Graffiti Plugins but... there are some that it can not read.

RED can't read GRF 5.0 Keyframe Library:
* Animated
* New Lower Thirds
* New Text Style
* Static

When I try to open/apply any of these... I get this message.
'These settings are not compatible with this version of Boris RED.'

I am running RED 4.0.3.060929 & Graffiti 5.1.1.070112

- I gave up on getting Graffiti LTD to install. I can't find a SN and after numerous calls and eMails to Boris... I still can't find the SN. This forum has gotten me further than anything.

There is a free update for Red that takes you from 4.0 to 4.1. I would definitely give that a try.

[edit]
I'm not sure why you need to import the Graffiti libraries. As I understand, Red has all the Graffiti and FX presets plus more. When I browse my Red library I see a mix of files with extensions of "red" "grf" and "bfx".

Are you able to Open/Apply all the files with extensions of "red" "grf" and "bfx" from within RED?

I can see these files with extensions of "red" "grf" and "bfx" but when I try to Open/Apply the ones I mentioned above I get the error.

I'll look into the RED Update.

Yes, I can both open and save in any of those three formats from within Red.
