Vegas 7,Win2K, WinXP, and external monitor

I have been fighting a strange inconsistency using Vegas 7e. When I install vegas 7 under windows2000 and attempt to play an avi clip to an external monitor, it drops frames badly and I can't get the sound to stay in sync no matter how I change adjustments. I tried this on 3 different computers with the same results. All have been using Vegas 5 with no problems.
As I have WindowsXP on 2 of these computers I tried V7 under WinXP and it played almost perfectly. My question is why the difference? Vegas 7 is supposed to be supported by both Win2K and WinXP but on Win 2K the external monitor is next to useless. Has any one else run into this?
Am I doing something wrong?
This is the first time I tried V7, I have had it for quite a while and only a couple of days ago actually tried to install it.
I'm quite happy with win2k, and would like to stay with it as long as possible, but if I can't resolve this dilemma I may be forced to make a choice, or look at other software.
All these computers are custom built using P4 chips at 3 GHz with 1G memory
