Vegas 8.0c - burn to disk - DVD option missing?

Christian de Godzinsky wrote on 2/4/2009, 2:24 PM
Hi,

Just recently needed to burn a DVD straight from the timeline (plain vanilla SD PAL 50i 4:3). All of a sudden I cannot find an option for burning a DVD!!! I am offered CD's, Video and multimedia CD formats - and BluRay (on DVD). How do I burn a plain vanilla DVD from the timeline - such as I was able to do before??? Very confusing. Is this a bug or what?

Hmmmm ... (scratching head mode) ... i don't think this was ever available in Vegas.

Definitely not available in any version of Vegas Pro. Do you have Studio? If so, you're in the wrong forum.

Wait a minute,

Are you saying that it is possible to burn DVD's directly from the timeline in Vegas Studio? That would be perfect for my wife. She just can't deal with all of the steps it takes to make a DVD shuffling between Vegas Pro and DVD architect.

Thanks,

Hi,

Hmm.. I posted past midnight an I was quite tired. I must have mixed things up. Apologies. Im on VP8.0c /VP8.1 and the burn to disk option actually never had the option to burn DVD's?! It had (has) options to burn audio CD's and multimedia disks.

Now 8.0c additionally includes direct burn to Bluray. Somehow its strange and silly that the DVD direct burn is missing - as an option. You can burn directly low end audio and video CD's, as well as high end Bluray (on Bluray or DVD disks), but not burn native DVD's, the format that probably the majority of VP8 users still produce for...

If I just want to quickly burn a short test DVD from the timeline for a customer - that's no go. Bluray can be done. But very few people want to preview on bluray a film that is anyhow going to be delivered on DVD. Or they lack the players. Strange that SCS jumped over this option. It would have been logical and easy for them to include both Bluray and DVD direct burn. All required software modules exisist in their posession so why not?

I know I can use DVDA or any other burning application, it would howver have been convenient and fast to do such this directly from the timeline... Somehow I get the feeling that adding new bells and whistles is more important, than fixing known old flaws, bugs or shortcomings... Too sad, this seems to be true for the majority of the software industry... Someone probably calculated like "how many more copies of VP8 do we sell if we include this feature", and cam to the conclusion that it is not worth it, compared to the efforts. To be one of the best, you must however make sure that all details are in order. That differentiates a good product from a bad one.

Apologies if I sound negative, just needet to let this out from my chest... I still love this software, with its shortcomings and unfixed bugs.

I think the reason could be that DVD Architect came out early enough to appease those who wanted to burn their own DVDs so that the function wasn't necessary in Vegas. When BluRay suddenly won the battle SONY felt that it was critically important to allow users to burn BD but didn't think DVDA 5 would be available soon enough so they included it in Vegas as a stopgap. There was no need to retroactively add DVD burning since DVDA already handled that.

There's really not that many steps in using DVDA for a simple dvd burn. Once you've done it a couple of times, you'll be surprised how simple & fast it is.

Yes, I have done it a zillllion times, and probably will do it a zillion times.... I just would be very convenient an time saving to be able to just burn a short piece of the timeline directly to DVD, instead of doing all this fiddling in DVDA...

But for example - for a Vegas newcomer - it surely is quite confusing when the application supports direct burn2disk function - for low end formats (CD, video CD multimedia disk) and high end format (Bluray) - but the most needed (burn to DVD) is missing. For new users it can be hard to understand why it is missing...

I fully undestand how we have come to this, but I cannot help that it feels a little funny...
