vegas 8.0c crashing

leewise wrote on 6/14/2010, 11:35 AM
Vegas just started crashing. The detailed error message indicates that ntdll.dll is causing a memory addressing error.

At about the same time, I noticed that several video objects on my timeline turned red. I haven't seen this before. Are they red because they have become corrupted?

At this point I can open the .veg file. But if I do anything, like just previewing, the program crashes.

I'm running Vegas on Vista Home Premium. Doing a search on ntdll.dll memory access errors turns up a lot of responses, but none concerning Vegas. I have two copies of ntdll.dll on my machine. It appears one is in system32 folder and the other is in the sysWOW64 folder.

Anybody else experiencing these symptoms?

Any suggestions?

Lee

post the whole error message please. It normally says ntdll because that's part of the OS, it most likely will have something more useful there too.

have you just added clips to an existing project.. if so possibly a bad file, try deleting the most recent addition

In answer to winrock:

Yes, I have been adding new clips and still photos. No, I cannot go back and delete, as vegas crashes whenever I attempt to do anything with the file at this point.

Shame on me for not being vigorous in making backups. Vegas has been so solid in the past that I got complacent...

I can open a new file an import the supposed bad clips with no problem. I can't make any sense out of my symptoms at this point.

hmmm.... was hoping the crash would give a simple solution. :( Was vegas setup to make automatic backups?

Response to TheHappyFriar:

Well, thank you for asking the right question. Yes, I did have the backup command on. I had assumed (wrong!) that the backup had only backed up the corrupted file. It turned out that I was partially right. When trying to render the backup file, it crashed. However, I was just able to make a copy of the file, delete the last half, and render the first half. That saved me days of editing--re-creating the first half hour. So back to the backup file...and I will see how much more I can get out of it.

Thanks to you both for your helpful comments and questions! Great forum!
