Vegas 8.1

Is Vegas 8.1 a 64-bit version only? I am using 8.0c and am hoping that 8.1 (32-bit) corrects the bugs with M2TS and TS files.

The reason I ask this is that 1) the filename includes "x64" and 2) trying to install it on XP Pro SP3 gives an error saying it isn't a valid Win32 application but I can't find the 32 bit version.

I think VP8.1 is 64b Vista only.
You need to upgrade to VP9 to fix those matters.

Are you saying that specifically the M2TS problem is fixed in v9.0 or that 8.0c is the last maintenance release in general?

8.0c is the last 32b maintenance release of V8.
You can download & install V9e to see if it fixes your issues.

I answered my own question and yes, both version can be installed.

The M2TS file problem (empty LFE channel) still exists in v9e

M2TS file support was introduced in v7 (maybe earlier) and hasn't ever worked correctly.
