Does anyone know if Vegas 8 will be bundled with the same software as 7? That is, will it still include:
- AC-3 encoding
- Boris Graffiti LTD
- Magic Bullet
The press release says that it will include DVD Architect 4.5, but nothing about the others.
AC-3 Encoding is a given because I believe that is Sony's own tool.
Not quite, it's licenced from Dolby and from what I've seen the best interface implementation of any NLE. Glad to see it's not in anyway dumbed down.
Sony Creative Software Dolby-certified AC-3 encoder
The language they use seems to say it's Sony's tool. But you have to pay Dolby for their technology.
Just like Fraunhoefer or somebody once owned mp3 technology and tried to make people pay for it. From Wikipedia
In September 1998, the Fraunhofer Institute sent a letter to several developers of MP3 software stating that a license was required to "distribute and/or sell decoders and/or encoders". The letter claimed that unlicensed products "infringe the patent rights of Fraunhofer and THOMSON. To make, sell and/or distribute products using the [MPEG Layer-3] standard and thus our patents, you need to obtain a license under these patents from us."
firstly, your not restricted to AC3.. WMV9 also offers multiple audio channels, as well as teh option of exporting multiplePCMs based o the amaster output channels and levels.
With this, it allows for greater flexibility for audio mastering as your not stuck with any given format.
In essence, you can deliver WMV9 HD usign 5.1 surround sound without the need to touch any Dolby technologies
Moving on..
as the licese for Dolby Digital is through DVDA, the output option of AC3 is only available once DVDA is installed.
Consideirng AC3 and PCM are mandatory audio formats within the DVD standards, im sometimes annoyed the MPG audio (being an optional format, like DTS) is not supported.. I can understand why it isnt, but working with it first hand, defeats the purpose of MPG conversion upon capture. Sometimes al you might want to do is ccapture a tape straight to DVD but as it stands, we much conform to AC3 or PCM standards, forcing another step before we cna even burn the disc)
Either way, the AC3 license has got nothign to do with the surrond sound mixing within Vegas, its basiclaly the license to export, which Vegas "borrows" from DVDA (from my understanding )
I believe by doign it this way, it keeps prices to a minimum as the ac3 plugin for premiere alone (as an example) is abotu $350 from memory. Judging those prices, im glad it was done this way. Then again, i paid 2k for Surcode DTS encoder which forces me to then outsource my DVD authoring (using that codec) to a 3rd party, in addition to being forced to provide (by DVD standard requirements) an AC3 or PCM version <mandatory> (along with the selective forma)t
However im still annoyed that DVDA doesnt support DTS or MPG audio..To me, for a fully featured authoring tool, these optional formats can save alot of hassles and also potentially offer an additional money spinner.. Sadly, if an aithoring tool doesnt support these optional formats, its not fully featured in my book. It does most of what i ned though and im making money with it, so thats pretty much all that matters i guess
