Vegas 8 crashing when importing video clips

Vegas 8b is crashing every time i go to Import Media... I get to the explorer, choose my clips, say OK, they import fully and completely, and immediately after Vegas gives me the error that something unexpected happens and it has to close.

Now, even then, I can't close that box, but i can actually go back to vegas, save my project, then finally close that OK button on the error message, which of course closes vegas.

When I open my project back up, the clips are there, no problem. so it executes the command fine, but always give me that error. What could be going on?

More info: XP SP2, Athlon 3700+, 2GB RAM, importing .avi's

What camera did your footage originate on?

Vegas 8 and Canon cams really aren't getting along in a number of situations. Some have had no problems at all while others, including myself, have had oodles.

if it's just .avi's, not entirely sure. I know I cannot import more than 15 or so Canon .m2t clips in Vegas 8 without it crashing. If I render to intermediate using Cineform, and import those... no problem.

How many clips are you trying to import and have you tried halfing that to see if it will bring a certain number in without crashing?

cheno

ps - interesting thing I noticed last night when previewing Canon .m2t files from explorer in Vegas - I could click on about 6 or 7 before Vegas crashed. Something about Canon and Sony not getting along.

The footage I'm working with origininated on a Canon HV20.

The clips I was importing (there were two of them) were .avi's capture with Cineform NeoHDV. But I can swear I've seen it crash other times before I even got Cineform, simply importing video from other projects, but I'll check that tonight for sure.

So like I said, I was only importing 2 at a time. I think it happened another time importing only 1. So definitely weird, especially seeing as nothing really goes "wrong" other than the error message. If I save, accept the error and close, then reopen everything is fine and dandy intact with the clips i just imported.

Hi Cheno,

I had a similar problem with my HV10 and HV20 material that I had imported with HDVSplitt. I could import five to 15 m2ts in the timeline and it crashed. In the explorer window I could preview 30 to 35 m2ts and it crahsed also. The memory usage of the PF was going postal with the HDVSplitt stuff.
It seems like Vegas doesn't like other capture programs. I would like to say to try at first a recapture of your material in Vegas and see if it is still the same problem.
In regard to the jpgs you are not alone. I have read about this but can not remember what's the problem's solution.

I am also getting trouble with crashes based on the number of clips I import.

In my case I can import hundreds of HDVSplit clips, no problem (from my Sony Z1). But if I import HDV m2 clips that Vegas has smart-rendered out from the timeline, it crashes after about 30. I have 4Gb RAM and x64.
