Vegas 8 losing toolbar scipt/icons?

kentwolf wrote on 5/11/2008, 11:29 PM
I have my Vegas 8 toolbar customized with common scripts I use assigned to relevant icons.

I have noticed that every now and then, the toolbar icons get "messed up" in that icons/scripts I had set are changed. Icons I did not put there as well as scripts I did not assign are now on the toolbar.

Closing, then restarting Vegas 8 does not help. The toolbar remains NOT how I had it configured.

I never had this issue with Vegas 4, 5, 6, or 7. Seems like a Vegas 8 thing.

Anyone else have this?

I've had this happen to me both in V7 and V8 [prior to V7 I had no real need for scripts, so I can't tell you about the behavior]. But the remedy is simple, just go into tools/scripting and click on "Rescan Script Menu Folder."

>>...just go into tools/scripting and click on "Rescan Script Menu Folder."...

Thanks. Unfortunately, it's not the "can't see any toolbar icons" issue that a rescan solves.

The toolbar icons/scripts actually *changed* to something different.

The following image shows the problem in unmistakeable terms:

http://home.comcast.net/~kentwolf/20080512ToolbarChangeIssue.jpg

The problem is toward the right side of the toolbar. It simply *changed* without me doing anything. This is not the first time this has happened. And it has only happened to me with Vegas 8.

Any suggestions would certainly be welcome.

Thanks!

Alrightee then... :)

Would anyone happen to know where the toolbar settings are stored?

It does not appear to be in the registry(searching for mouseover toolbar script/icon), and not do I seem to be able to find a relevant *.ini file.

I could could determine where the toolbar settings are, I can work with this.

Thanks!

I don't use Vegas 8, so there may be some new problems lurking there that I don't know about. However, Vegas has had problems with the icon toolbar and the script folder for as long as I can remember. Also, to let Vegas off the hook just a little, quite often I have seen my computer hiccup and suddenly forget the location of various temporary files, and go back to using the default location. The symptoms include not having any of your "cookies" remembered.

The solution to the Windows version of the problem is to re-boot.

As for Vegas, at least one reason for the problem is that Vegas chokes if there are too many "things" in the folders that are holding the scripts. Some of the commercial scripts, like Excalibur (and I suspect Ulitmate S, although I don't own that), put lots of little "scriplets" into these folders. Then, for some reason and under some circumstances that I cannot quite fathom, Vegas can no longer "see" all the scripts and things in those folders. One result is the reassignment or outright loss of icons on the toolbar.

This was an even bigger problem somewhere back around Vegas 5 or 6 and Sony supposedly fixed it. The problem did seem to go away for the most part, but recently -- using Vegas 7 -- I have seen it again. I have an "extra" folder within my main scripts folder that contains several hundred scripts that I've downloaded or written, and often when I go to the Tools -> Scripting menu (which is where you should go to check out this problem), I no longer see all the scripts. If I select "Rescan" from that menu (which is what baysidebas was suggesting you do), it doesn't help.

The only thing I can suggest -- and this will work -- is to dramatically reduce the number of files in your script folder, if you can. Thus, if you have filters or scripts or other files in those folders or subfolders that you don't need to directly access, move them to some other location. You can still run these scripts manually using the Run Script command from the Tools -> Scripting menu. It's a little awkward, but if it's a script you only use a few times a year, it might be worth the trade-off.

I have 69 *.js script files in my script folder.

Is that a lot?

Thanks.

I have seen this icon disapearing once on V8, shortly after installi ng US4 on my test PC, but I think a reboot actually cured it for me.

I have 69 *.js script files in my script folder.I have no idea. Here is the post from four years ago where I first reported the problem. Sony did make some changes, and the number of scripts you could have in a folder before the problem happens certainly increased, but they didn't fix the problem completely.

Script icons disappear

I have a lot of scripts [Excalibur mostly] but only a dozen or so accessible as buttons on the toolbar. From time to time they all vanish [I haven't seen a causal relationship to anything I may have done at the time] but a rescan command always restores the buttons. Maybe I don't have enough scripts to make the vanishing act more enduring ;>)

baysidebas,

Exactly. Happens to me every odd or then. Close and reopen VegasPro8b, everything is restored. ???????

Darryl, have you tried the rescan script menu folder solution? Or do you have to restart Vegas when that happens?

This is getting really frustrating. I am still having Vegas 8 "lose" the toolbar customizations as originally stated at the start of this thread.

I looked up some of my pre-Vegas 8 setup characteristics and since the advent of Application Extensions, I actually have *fewer* scripts in my script folder than I had with Vegas 6 or 7, possibly even 5, yet I never had this loss of toolbar customizations until Vegas 8. In fact, the initial version (a??) of Vegas 8 before the latest didn't have this loss of toolbar customizations issue either.

http://home.comcast.net/~kentwolf/20080512ToolbarChangeIssue.jpg ...still applies.

Baysidebas,

Honestly haven't tried rescan. Will give it a go if and when.

Regarding my original post about my Vegas 8 toolbar actually changing the assigned toolbar icon.

See:

Toolbar issue

I think I *may* have found the answer…

As per my earlier post above, I originally had 69 script files (*.js) in my Vegas Script Menu folder. Some here thought that was too many. The vast majority of these scripts were from Excalibur.

When I cleared them all out and started toolbar customization from scratch. I noticed that I had Ultimate S 4 invokable from one of my toolbar customizations. You can see it in the above link. I also noted that I had Ultimate S 4 “always on,” so to speak by virtue of running Ultimate S 4 via the new “extensions” functionality, that being, a dockable window.

With this described setup, my toolbars were losing set customizations very frequently. It also was not too long ago that I upgraded and installed the latest version of Ultimate S (4).

I removed the somewhat redundant Ultimate S 4 toolbar icon and my toolbar hasn’t lost any customizations since. Also, I now have 70 script files (*.js) in my Vegas Script Menu folder.

Whatever the reasoning, all works very well. No loss of toolbar customizations.

Just an FYI…

Hmmm... thanks Kent. I'll remove the Excalibur toolbar icon and hopefully that will resolve my disappearing script icons issue as well.

. . and the other thing ..

Remember in the other thread, I was moaning about NOT having my script folders "lumped" together within the script folder? Well, I decided to place a "1" in front of each "Grazie" folder, in the Script folder, and now they appear at the top of the script folder menu AND in alphabetic order too!

Grazie

What we need is a script to implement all these fixes!

> I removed the somewhat redundant Ultimate S 4 toolbar icon and my toolbar hasn’t lost any customizations since.

Actually, the icon in your picture is Ultimate S3 not 4. The Ultimate S3 icon is RED and the Ultimate S4 icon is BLUE. If you still have Ultimate S3 installed (which the fact that the icon is still there proves) you might want to uninstall it to reduce the number of scripts.

When I created infinitiCAM I originally created options to install 9, 16, 25, & 36 cameras. Each camera switch is a script and there is one for "cut", "dissolve", and "sync" which means that every camera had three (3) scripts. So 9 cams = 27 scripts, 16 cams = 48 scripts, 36 cams = 108 scripts, etc. In my testing, Vegas couldn't handle even 16 cams. The additional 48 scripts put me over the top with the other scripts I had. So I decide to only ship 9 camera scripts. :(

So 69 scripts is hovering around Vegas' limit for scripts. Now that we have Command Extensions, there is no need for all these camera scripts because one command can handle all of the switching (i.e., I built a camera switch pad that remains open and allows you to change cameras using a matrix of buttons) but Vegas still needs to increase it's capacity for scripts.

Script developers like Edward and myself wish we could help you but this is really a Vegas problem that only Sony can fix.
