Vegas 8 not loading properly

Bejayar wrote on 11/26/2009, 11:38 AM
I'm running Vegas Pro V8.0c (build 260) on Win XP Pro. Haven't used it for some time and have just tried load it up. The splash screen appears and it gets as far as "Creating Windows", and displays some of the windows. Sony Media Manager then activatyes and displays "Starting database service....". It then hangs and nothing further happens. Pressing the Cancel button appears to do nothing other than grey out the button, and Task Manager shows that both Vegas and Media Manager are still running. After a long delay (about a minute) the Sony Media Manager box disappears and Vegas continues to load as normal.

Vegas has always loaded without any problem in the past, and wjhat's now happening is very irritating to say the least, Also, I've no idea whether the failure of Media Manager to complete is losing me anything.

Can anyone help, please ?

It looks like a timeout while media manager connects to the SQL server.

Is SQL server shown as running In the services management window ?

For what it's worth. On my XP system, I find that if I have a camera or deck connected and turned on, my sytstem will hang anywhere from a minute to 10 ro 15 minutes. If I boot with them turned off, it loads normally.

Thanks for the suggestion, Lord of the Newbies.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I changed my e-mail address in my profile and that screwed up my registration, so I've had to re-register!

Since making this post I've tried updating MediaManager to V2.4 but the installation hung as soon as it got to to thge "Starting database service" bit, and the install didn't complete. I set the system back to a previous restore point so that I got MM 2.3 back, and then removed MM2.3. Vegas now loads OK. So the problem is solved, temporarily at least, but I'd like to re-install Media Manager at some stage - if I do, should I install the my original version 2.3 or the later V2.4?

I've looked under Computer Management>Services and Applications>Services and SQL Server (SONY_MEDIAMGR2) is listed, but the status is blank. Presumable it should show "Started" if the service is running. The startup type is set to manual - do I need to change this to Automatic?

Re. Lynn's suggestion, I've had no cameras or devices connected, and as I've said Vegas is now loading with Media Manager uninstalled.

" I've no idea whether the failure of Media Manager to complete is losing me anything."

If you're not actively using it then nothing, that's why it's an optional install. If you're not using it and I'd say by your question you're not, then you'd be probably be better off without it installed.
If you do want to use it I'd suggest first learning what it is and how to use it.

Bejayar,

I second farss. If you don't need media manager then don't install it.
If you want to have it again, you would go with v2.4.

Regarding your issue:

You should have 4 SQL related services:
SQL server browser, automatic start
SQL server VSS writer, automatic start (I am not sure it is mandatory for Vegas media manager)
SQL Server AD help, disabled
SQL Server (SONY_MEDIAMGR2), manual start (this is the database instance used by Media Manager)

Once Vegas is launched, the SONY_MEDIAMGR2 instance should be started automatically

If it still fails, you can check with SQL server configuration manager utility if something looks odd. Launch the instance with the services administration tool, then check if Vegas still can't connect to the SQL server. Last resort, liaise with SCS support.

With the hope it helps.

Thanks, Farss and Lord of the Newbies.

I've never really used Media Manager (probably because I've never got my head around it). On the basis of "what you've never had you don't miss"' I think I'll manage without it for now. Might have a go at re-installing when I've got some spare time - I've checked and I've got all those SQL services in their correct states.

Many thanks for your prompt advice.

You should be able to disable the Media Manager from General preferences. Then you won't have to wait for anything to time out at startup and it won't be necessary to uninstall it.
