Just to reinforce this problem. I encountered the same Vegas problem with HDTV (both 1080-60i and 720-60p) recorded by Windows Media Center 2008 TV Pack. A talk show 1080-60i recording that has stereo AC-3 audio [48000Hz 128 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0) ] opens fine in Vegas v9.0c (64-bit), but not recordings that have AC-3 5.1 audio [48000Hz 384 kb/s tot , 6 chnls (3/2 .1) ].
The behavior I encountered was Vegas only recognized the audio portion of the MPEG-2 program stream file (*.mpg) produced by Windows Media Center 2008 TV Pack. Yes, these recordings playback normally in Windows Media Player and VLC.
If I used MediaCoder to create a new MPG file, copying the video and converting the AC-3 5.1 to stereo, Vegas reads the MPG properly.
