Vegas 9.0c won't open 1920x1080 5.1 MPEG

Stuart W wrote on 12/11/2009, 11:40 AM
I have a 1920x1080 5.1 channel audio 40Mbps file which Windows Media Player plays without a problem.

When I try to load it in Vegas it says file type unknown and gives error 0x80047000.

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit, Vegas 9.0c 64 bit.

Any idea what the problem is? Is a file like this supported?

And the same file opens fine in DVD Architect 5.0b.

File specs as reported by MediaInfo or Gspot?
Can you upload a short clip in its native format somewhere?

If the file is .m2t or .m2ts, it "might" have to be demuxed in another utility first.

Just a longshot, is the file extension .mpg ?
If so, does changing the extension to .vob allow it to be imported by Vegas?

A clip (if possible) would let us try some things and perhaps come up with a workaround.

Saves: AA3, AC3, AIF, ATRAC, AVC, AVI, DPX, EXR, FLAC, HDP, MOV, MP3, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, MP4, M2T, Sony MXF, OGG, PCA, RM, W64, WAV, WMA, WMV

No, it can't directly with the AC-3 extension.
There are some tested workarounds that are worth exploring, however

Should it reject the file, or just the audio stream? It won't let me use the video track, even if I select video streams only on import.

Versions of Vegas up until v8.0b would open this type of file. It has since been broken and I really wish that Sony would fix whatever is wrong.

John,I'm probably wrong, but hasn't vegas always had a problem loading correctly >2 channel audio that was mux with video?

Just to reinforce this problem. I encountered the same Vegas problem with HDTV (both 1080-60i and 720-60p) recorded by Windows Media Center 2008 TV Pack. A talk show 1080-60i recording that has stereo AC-3 audio [48000Hz 128 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0) ] opens fine in Vegas v9.0c (64-bit), but not recordings that have AC-3 5.1 audio [48000Hz 384 kb/s tot , 6 chnls (3/2 .1) ].

The behavior I encountered was Vegas only recognized the audio portion of the MPEG-2 program stream file (*.mpg) produced by Windows Media Center 2008 TV Pack. Yes, these recordings playback normally in Windows Media Player and VLC.

If I used MediaCoder to create a new MPG file, copying the video and converting the AC-3 5.1 to stereo, Vegas reads the MPG properly.
