its been brought up so many times now that this is a viable alternative, however, how do you hear both vegas and acid? They fight over the soundcard even if you are using different channels.
This is a dilemma for me. ASIO means lower latency, but I do alot of layering, I slow things down to a crawl if I have to, and usually deal with one track at a time. MME works with all the SOFO apps I have, but I was told from eMagic (I have their AW2 PCI audio interface) that if ASIO is available, as it is with Acid 4, to use it, and that's what I get talkin with SOFO also...now...how does this equate with throwin "the stuff" around, for example: acid 4 to formulate, soundforge 6 for edits, vegas video 3 for mixing, and finally CD Architect 5 to burn or fling it over to a cassette format...? do I need to constantly switch something so the apps can work together..? there's gotta be somebody in this forum that knows what I'm talkin about...do I just stay MME all the way thru..? or do I keep using ASIO with Acid 4 only...?
Set my Acid 4 for ASIO and the rest for MME..? that's what I got now, cuz my other apps don't accept ASIO...but haven't played with it all that much to know if it's possible in all situations...I think one guy told me it shouldn't be a problem when migrating...for me, that's goin from Acid to SF6(edits) to VV3(mixing) to CDA5...somebody must be doin this, huh..?
In Vegas 4 you must have "Close Audio and MIDI ports on loss of focus" set in the general prefs. This will force Vegas to release all ASIO (and WDM/Wave) ports when it is not playing (or recording.)
This will permit (if the drivers behave) for a second app to use the audio ports.
We also have this setting in ACID 4, but we weren't as tough in how we released the drivers so with SOME ASIO drivers, the Close will not work correctly.
No, some drivers can be multi client regadless of how many apps use them. Some specifically let you set things up to share different ports in specific ways. The problem is ASIO was never defined to share things. Some vendors made it work, others didn't. Milage will vary from vendor to vendor.
I guess my question was one of semantics, since to migrate to another program, i.e., acid 4 to vegas or to SF, you need to have both programs open..? like if I were to drag and drop...? however, I was told by SOFO that this "...will not be an issue [because] the file being moved from program to program does not reflect the sound device driver you are using..." Hence, as I understand then, be it ASIO or MME doesn't matter at all when migrating between programs...am I an idiot..?
so in reality, the points JoeD made about vegas and acid running separate kinda ring true dont they ? I figure if I run acid out of an mme driver, run vegas in ASIO, and play my guitar, then because of the different driver latencies, wont the tracks be in the wrong place?
Unless I miss my guess, techsupp said the music file, .wav or whatever, doesn't carry soundcard preference...but it still confuses me, especially when you are migrating the ideas cuz you have to have more than one music app open, but perhaps not for playback...I don't know...don't see any probs with going from Acid ASIO to vegas3/sf6 MME right now, but I'm not really pushing the envelope either...more experimentation I guess...by the time my stuff gets to vegas, whether it's ASIO or MIDi or whatever, it'll have been edited in SF6...
Technology can be it's own worst enemy sometimes. Everyone wants 1 PC to do ALL things, with the minimal amount of hardware in that PC. Sorry, I can't help with any suggestions if that's your goal....or your budget. I run ACID and Vegas on 2 seperate PC's. My main decision for this is ONE: I have more screen space so I don't have to keep minimizing programs. TWO: It cuts down on the LOAD of processing power required for each PC. THREE: I don't have to worry about hardware conflicts with sound cards and Midi interfaces and which app is using a certain output or input. For my first reason, I could feasibly use a multi-monitor configuration on 1 PC, and put ACID on one monitor and Vegas on the other. But that would then lead to my FORTH reason for using seperate PC's: If 1 PC crashes, I don't loose data from both Apps. That's my solution....I'm not saying it will work for everyone, but it makes life a lot easier, not having to worry about these conflicts you're having.
Ahh, the sound of now TWO systems whirring in your studio. Yeah!! Genius!
Monitors up the wazzoo rather than a couple on a dual vid card. Another typing keyboard and mouse to find space for.
More in OS, parts, on your 2nd system.
Or do you like that professional feel the "switchbox" provides (LOL).
Do you even work consistently with these apps Red? Record audio consistently? Or do you just like setting up all this gear with triumphant feeling and gaze in amazment at all the "pretty lights" and mechanical whirring?
The computing power is there for a vegas/acid4 in one application. Wake up.
So basically Reds saying he has to run two separate systems now to what should essentially be able to be done within one application - acid4/vegas. Call it "acigas" (vaporware that F-ING "SHOULD BE").
There's one real argument TODAY as for using another PC for audio work - a separate PC to run soft-synths and soft-samps. That's it. The other system (one app) should be handling the necessary rest (even at a hobbyist level).
Is Acid4 really cutting the mustard with it's soft-synth/samp handling anyway. NO!
Save it red. Your arguments on acid/vegas application separation blow even more as each passing day goes by.
This is nickel and dime baby - pure and simple.
The OBVIOUS merge would be a benefit to all in the end (unless you're a moron who enjoys banging ones head against the wall while working).
It's rare to be able to say this confidently - but a BIG, FIRM, MIDDLE FINGER to all those who argue otherwise (as well as to SF on this gameplaying).
Bloated app? Instabilities? - BULLSH*T!!! (I don't see many of you audio engineers bitching about the video features "bloating" the app).
what are you getting out of defending SF on this game anyway people?
Jesus Christ this is ridiculous. There's no real excuse as for this separation.
It's disgusting.
