Vegas and Adat PCR card setup....HELP!!!

Help anybody:

I have tried for months now to get various versions of vegas, to reliably run on my system. The screen freezes whenever I tinker with effects, while playing
files(or just about any dual tasks). The status monitor says I'm not taxing mem or CPU much. But still the system freezes if doing more that one thing at a time.

Q: anybody using the ADAT PCR card and vegas Video (any v. )without lockup problems?

Q: If so, what is your HW, MB and CPU setup/speed?

(I am almost sure this feezing/lockup thing is a timing problem between chipset, CPU, and the application. but I just can't prove it!!! I have also seen some strange things related to the PCR Card.
In my many nights of anguish, I found the fine-print of the MB user's manual say's it's not "guaranteed" Certified for reliable operation at 133 Mhz FSB speed).
maybe that's why it was locking up on the same MB with
533MHz P3 installed and P133 mem!!!

Anyone with suggestions on what to replace this MB and CPU with (other than a P4 and new PS, case, mem, etc.)???

My system specs are:

HW:
Abit BE6-II MB
Intel P3 500Mhz FSB=100Mhz
192MB RAM
2 WD HD's 7200rpm
Adat PCR card
audiowerks 2 card
AGP video card

SW:
Windows 98SE
all card drivers
ACID 3.0
ADAT Connect
ADAT Edit

no internet stuff. just audio/studio necessary stuff
no unnecessary windows opt's.

PS-

SF the SW is great, but it would be so helpfull, if you guys had some kind of "recommendation" list for
HW (MB's, Proc's, sound cards). Or setup's proven to run the applications smoothly for 8, 16, and 24 trk.

however, I think I'm probably the only unlucky one with these types of problems!

I'm using the BE6-II MB with a PIII733 [133FSB] and PC133 CAS2 Micron RAM, running at the 133mHz FSB setting with INCREDIBLE results [VERY stable]...I changed to that motherboard from a Tyan Trinity running a VIA 133 chipset, which bluescreened as often as it played audio.

I suspect your ADAT card drivers OR the physical configuration of your PCI cards...The BE6-II ties at least one set of PCI card slots together in a "master/slave" config sharing an IRQ. It's important to avoid having two buss-hog cards on those two slots [can't remember off-hand, but I *think* it might be slot 1 and 5].

I echo your wishes to see Sonic Foundry post a list of prefferable componenets for PC's capable of various performance levels...It took a while for me to finally configure a system that was reliable. Now it's all-but outdated!

Best of luck!

thank a bunch:

I did notice better performance with slots 2 and 4 instead. And with addition of AGP slot used for the video card.

1) However, what card or I/O system are you using for
ADAT xfer ?

2) I also believe the ADAT PCR drivers are suspect
( or a possible conflict between the AudioWerks 2
and the ADAT PCR card drivers being installed
on the same system).

I think I'll de-install the Audiowerks 2, and just use
the PCR card and see if Vegas still freezes.

I'll let you and fam know if i ever get this figured out. (Also, if anyone using PCR card with Vegas has any input, it would be appreciated).

thanks Mixnuts & Vegas fam

you were right !!!

Thanks MixNut.

The problem is in the drivers/HW for the Audiowerks 2 card. Once removed from the system, Vegas was super stable (could not get it to crash/freeze).

Now all I need is an AI3 or something, so I can playback the audio while monitoring recording on the PCR card.
