Vegas as a mastering application ?

What do you think about using Vegas as a mastering application ?
I already own sound forge + nero for all the process but Vegas seems much more convenient (and as a sound forge user the deal is quite interesting).
Is it possible to set some mastering plug-ins (I plan to use PSP VintageWarmer) on the tracks and then directly burn the cd ?
And can Vegas directly work on PCA files ?

Fantastic. Yes. Yes.

In several cases i've tried doing all my editing and mastering in Vegas instead of Sound Forge. Overall Vegas has many conveniences that Sound Forge doesn't, including DAO burning. I still like Forge better for the nitpicky hacking and slashing though, and now that Forge 6 is out there isn't much speed difference either. So now typically i'll start with Forge for editing, then move to Vegas for mastering.

Vegas can burn directly to CD with plugin effects. However, if you get too many complex and processor intensive effects going, you might have to prerender before burning or Vegas might not be able to keep feeding the burner fast enough. I haven't had this problem yet.

Chienworks:

I'm curious: why wouldn't you want to "prerender" anyway? It seems from your comment above that you are skipping the "final mix" stage and going direct to "mastering." More often than not it seems that there are some final tweaks and "brush strokes" that the final stereo mix can benefit from ie; "mastering."

Thanks,

drbam, i always prerender. But Erik asked if it was possible to write directly to CD without prerendering, and yes this is possible, up to a point.

I love using Vegas for mastering. Lately I've been creating alot of "non-commercial" live recordings that I've come across. The ability to cut and paste and fade in and out between segments is pure heaven when trying to create a cohesive recreation of the concert experience. I also use to great effect the dB-Audioware Multi-band limiter to boost output volume without distortion or unwanted side effects. It's really a bargain. This really works wonders. I have recently hit the wall when writing to disk and have to pre-render more now as well.

I use Vegas as a mastering tool constantly. Read my article on the subject over at the Creativecow.net site, click to the Vegas forum, and click on the picture of Douglas Spotted Eagle at the top. Long article, lots of pix, and you can see how easy creating a Redbook CD is. I use the PSP plugs a lot. They rock. I also use a LOT of WAVES plugs, and it's wonderful. See the article on Ike Willis in the front of this month's SOFO magazine.
