Vegas AVI files can't be read in ULead DVD software

After outputting an AVI file from Vegas Video 3.0 I am unable to use it in any ULead product. I use ULead DVD Workshop SE to create my DVDs. At the moment I am having to import the Vegas files into Windows Movie Maker (which reads them fine) and then resave them as AVIs before importing them into DVD Workshop. A real pain. Does anyone know if this might be a codec issue with Vegas, and if so, how I can fix it? I have no compatability problems with any of the ULead created AVI files. All programs will read them fine (including Vegas!)

Uncheck "Create an open DML (.avi version 2.0) compatible file" in the custom>video page of the .avi render dialog

OR

render the MPEG-2 file in Vegas to the parameters the DVD app requires. This latter is the preferred method.

"This latter is the preferred method." Why is that?

How do you determine a given apps codec preferences? Nero 6 "transcodes" my Vegas mpeg2. ParticleIllusion2SE requires I rerender a given clip with "Create an open DML compatible file" unchecked before I can apply the clip as a background app for animation. So many codecs, so little time.
