VEGAS & Boris-GRaffiti3.0? Help on Audio Preview and Run?

Grazie wrote on 1/25/2004, 11:35 PM
Apologies for the long title, but I always dislike "short" HELPS! . . anyways:

1 - Vegas and BG3 wont play nicely together. :

>>> a) I can fire up BG3 as a FX plugin.

>>> b) It arrives on the screen & I can't run the Video in the BG3 Preview

2 - Running BG3 as standalone

>>> a) I can fire up the Programme, but the Preview, which will now run, stubbornly refuse to play the audio with it?!?

So, if we have a BG3 & Vegas user out there I would dearly Looove to have a "side-bar" email session with you and not take up the good peoples time here - yeah?

Best regards,

Grazie

ps who every emails me, I promise to apply not a little "fun" . . don't know any other way . . don't yer know?!?

THis may be a limitation of the plug-in interface. In my limited use of RedGL you need to put your cursor over a frame that you want to see - you drop in the RedGL plug and you get the Vegas Plug-in pop up that has a button "Lauch Boris RedGL" (Or something) You click on it and RedGL opens and the timline only shows the one frame. In other words you can't run video...does this sound like the same thing you get with Graffiti? If so maybe this is just the way Boris products interact with Vegas as a whole.

(To be clear with RedGL - after you drop back into Vegas you can preview your effect on the timeline with full motion video. It is just from within RedGL you can only see a still with the effect overlayed on that. Makes it kind of hard to do proper keyframes that way because you have to set them in Vegas and re-open the RedGL interface, adjust, close, repeat....each time moving the cursor over the frame you want RedGL to display)

"THis may be a limitation of the plug-in interface." If this is the case . . I think you may be correct . . then this, IMHO, really stinks!

In summary all the "Preview Video & Audio" options won't do just that!! What's the point of having a Plugin if it reduces the editor to, basically, cartoon type slow frame by frame?

filmy, believe me I aint shooting the messenger here, but really, "In other words you can't run video...does this sound like the same thng you get with Graffiti? If so maybe this is just the way Boris products interact with Vegas as a whole. " . . .and yes this is EXACTLY what I'm getting!?!

This isn't the reason I purchased BG3 ". . ..you have to set them in Vegas and re-open the RedGL interface, adjust, close, repeat....each time moving the cursor over the frame you want RedGL to display)"

This is not good . . . :-(

IMHO, running B-G3.0 as a standalone is also non-intuitive too!

Now if there are some Boris/Graf operators that wpould contradict me AND give me some pointers as to howe it can be made to work WITH the video/movie running behind, please don't stand on ceremony . . .

What's the point of not having, at its simplest, a video file playing under my BG creations to check out if it works . . this is madness?!? Then I can't adjust the BG timeline stuff to run the look of it?!?!?

Thanks filmy,

Grazie

Yow Grazie,

Using RED so I am assuming it will be the same for G3

As filmy says Vegas only passes a static frame which is the same quality as the preview window setting

You can frameserve into RED when the timing needs to be matched to events on the timeline.

When I am using the RED engine (G3 standalone) and want to preview audio the proess is

Add the Video media as a movie track.
Add the Video media as an audio track.

When you preview the timeline in RED it has to complete a full pass to cache all the frames "before" the audio will be heard. There is also an option to preview with audio which needs to be selected in the preview menu.

Not sure how close this is to G3 but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

Paul, thanks for that. How did you "discover" this? I'm at the beginning of the manual - still - but when I see a Drop Down menu saying somthing like Include Audio . . that's what I go for. What you are telling me, good info as it is, is that one has to do some very odd dances to get what i want to see. Is this correct? Did you realise what to do from the manual? Have you had a long working rel;ationship with Red to realise this? . . . Anyways, bottom line I have to produce a rendered "thingy" to see what I've done - yeah?

Another question, do you use the FX plugin for Vegas FOR Red? Or do you just use the Boris t/l OUTSIDE of Vegas and do yer thang there? That is, do you disregard the Red FX Vegas interface completely?

Thanks Paul . . . ..

By rendered thingy I don't mean create a new movie file just hit the space bar or select preview to RAM from the preview menu, in RED the bar above the graphic window displays a blocked bar showing which frames have been cached in memory. It will only play back the audio when all frames have been cached so I let it do one full pass and then the audio appears on the second.

It is in the RED manual somewhere, it's a big app I'm still amazed at all it can do in one place rather than half a dozen seperate apps for chromakey/text/motion tracking/stablizing/rotoscoping etc. Not a long relationship with RED but I have put the hours in, in a short space of time and still learning :-)

I do use the plugin a lot but also frameserve and use the standalone application, depends on what I am doing. It's great to have the choice.

Grafitti being primarily text based sits well as a plugin IMHO. It would be better if Vegas passed frames from the timeline, hopefully in Vegas 5

It did take a while to get into the Boris way of doing things but now I find it pretty good to use and think it hangs together really well.

Hope that helps.

THANK YOU PAUL!!

I've just come off the phone with PAW - very hot ear here in London - who has put me on the right track - pun intended! - And we can't hear the audio file along with the B-G3 creation . . .

But, as I say I have more than enough now to get me thru' the night . ..

Best regards,

Grazie
