Vegas crashes a lot

I'm currently editing a lot of Windows media video files. When I play a file on the timeline and then stop or pause I often get the following message:
"An error has occurred". When I click on 'details' I get:
"Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.0
Version 4.0c (Build 184)
Exception 0xC0000008 (invalid handle) IP:0x77F966BC
In Module 'ntdll.dll' at Address 0x77F50000 + 0x466BC
Thread: Audio5Reader ID=0xE50 Stack=0x2D4F000-0x2D50000"
When I click on 'OK' I lose Vegas.

Often rebooting the computer solves the problem but sometimes it doesn't and I wait a few hours or days. So far I've always been able to get it to work eventually. The problem is definitely getting worse.

Is this a known problem with WMV? Is there anything I can do about it?

Possibly something else is fighting for control over a piece of hardware Vegas wants to use - and it won't let go. ntdll.dll is a Windows component. You could try to rename it (it's in your windows\system folder), reboot the machine and see if Windows wants to reinstall something. You mat need your original Windows CD to do that. If all fails, rename it back again.
This is rather drastic. Maybe someone else pops in with a more delicate approach.

Michelle,

Try disabling the Hotsynch Manager for your Handspring Visor if you have one.

There is also a security problem related to ntdll.dll and a buffer overflow vulnerability in Windows 2000 and NT. Search that one on Google.com to see what can be done about it if the forst suggestion doesn't work.

I found a post where someone with a similar sound card had this problem. I'm going to install the latest driver to see if that helps. There is no XP certified driver for this card.

Installing the latest audio driver seems to have solved the problem.

Which sound card are you using Michelle?

Kevin.

It's the M-Audio Delta-66.

I'm glad you have things working. Which driver version did you update to? I have an Audiophile 24/96 (same driver set - same known issue with the 0027 driver), but some of the driver versions do not work with my other audio applications (specifically, Cubase SX).

Thanks,
Kevin.

The driver is version 5.10.0.5029.

Thanks again.

Good thing you got that sorted. I have the same audio card, using an older driver without problems (Win98SE). But I'll go and get the newer one anyway. I'm not one who must have (all) the latest gear, but I am strongly in favour of the latest drivers.

Correction:
I do have the latest driver - you must be on XP or 2000.
