Vegas crashes computer

I've been running my purchased copy of Vegas and love the
program except it keeps crashing with this notice:

This programs has performed illegal operation and will be
shut down . . . (the details are as follows)
VEGAS caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0217:bff9a3c0.

I am running a PIII 450 w/128megs ram, ASUS P2B 440BX
100mghz mother board, Windows 95, this computer is
dedicated to hard disk recording, sound card is MOTU 2408.
The problem occurs at random times and I can't seem to find
any one thing to make it happen. And this (almost exact
error,VEGAS caused an invalid page fault in . . .) has come
up when I've been in Sound Forge and even in Windows
Explorer. Sometime it crashes to a blue screen and
sometimes I can just cancel it out and continue working.
Please help, I'm in the middle of a huge project.

Thank you

Hi,

I'm sorry you're experiencing so much crashing. We would really need
to have a solid repro case to nail this. The blue screen is scary -
i'd bet there was some hardware/driver problem happening somewhere.

what video card do you have? do you have the latest drivers for it
and the MOTU?

Again, any clue as to what sets it off will help... if we can't
reproduce it here, we can't debug it.

Thanks,
Caleb

Hi Caleb: My video card is an ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2x with 4 megs and
I just down loaded and installed the newest drivers yesterday. The
MOTU 2408 has their newest driver PCI324R2. I am using DA-88's and
transfering tracks in digital using word clock and synced to MTC.
I'm still crashing about every other song transfer. Tomorrow I will
try to pin down and document the problem better. First I'll try to
get to happen with analog inputs to the 2408, then digital then Vegas
synced to MTC. Up until Vegas was install I had no problems. I was
using the 2408 and Sound Forge 4.0 w/digital transfers from a DAT
player. You are probably right about it being a hardwar/driver
problem I just don't know what to check at this time. Also, during a
transfer from the DA88's with Vegar synced to MTC, Vegas just stops
recording, and then starts again leaving a hole in the tracks. This
can happen with 12 tracks or when just recording 2 tracks. I will
try to get you more infor in the next day. Thank you for your
responce. mcm

There is a problem with the MTC that is being fixed. The drop outs
are due to a loss of sync that Vegas thinks happens. It also may be
causing some of the other issues you are seeing.

Q: Do you have the problem if you record with out using sync?

Try disabling SRP when streaming the tracks in. This will lighten the
load if all you are doing is recording from your DA-88s.

Peter, I have been trying to pin down what makes my system crash and
have not come up with anything except it is not just happening in
Vegas. Today I was working in Sound Forge 4.0e (build 219) just
playing back a stereo 44.1 .wav file and twice in 5 hours the mouse
pointer would lock up on the screen sit there for about 10 seconds
and then click to a black screen and reboot. No blue screen, no
error message, it would just automaticly reboot. The only thing I
can think of doing is to first take it to the computer shop and see
if there is anything going on with the mother board. If they can't
find anything then try to talk to MOTU and see if they have any
ideas. I have a feeling it's the 2408 drivers. If you or anyone out
there has any ideas of anything I should check, PC settings or
whatever it would be much appreciated. I know that this is not what
this forum is for other than the crashes started after I installed
Vegas. Maybe I should uninstall Vegas and go from there. Thank you,
MCM

I have seen this before. I had to remove the PCI-324 for it to go
away. I then installed it in a different physical slot and I have not
seen the problem again.

I have contacted MOTU on this, but as of yet, have not heard anything.

Interesting, I just did that very thing last night and so for
everything is ok. I will keep you posted if all is well this may
help another user. I hope MOTU responds and I too will drop them a
note maybe they will start to get an idea just how many PC's are
using the 2408. Thank you, mcm

I have seen the problem with some motherboard
manufacturers. In my experience there is a resource share
violation do to improper IRQ handling. What you need to
check is the device manager. Double click on the computer
at the top of the list to see if any other devices are
register under the same IRQ. If so there is the problem.
you Moterboard should have come with a cd that has some
kind of IRQ handler driver for 95. It may say that 98sec.
has it's own driver for this, but I have never seen it
work. In my case my modem was sharing the same IRQ as the
sound card, and when I'd dial out half way through the
handshake the system would reboot. In all cases after I
installed the driver even though the IRQ where stell
sharing the system would no longer reboot.
I hope this solves your prolem.
