Vegas EFFECTS Completely Unusable

Hello all. I'm in a serious predicament.

In 2023, I was using Vegas Effects 20 many, many times on my Dell Inspiron laptop, which had 16GB of Ram and an i7 processor. I used Windows 10 on it, and I was able to render an entire 40 min EP with a hefty amount of effects with 0 crashes. [See for reference]

I've switched laptops, now using Windows 11 on an HP Envy, 16GB Ram with an AMD Razen 5 graphics card it came with. Vegas Effects is borderline usable. I'll load up one, two, or even 3 effects, and without warning it will not respond, which it rarely ever recovers from. I even tried pulling up one effect, and before it even applied, it simply crashed and I'm seriously grieved by this. My latest video, , took an INSANE amount of preparatory renders! If you look at the video, just for a little over 2 mins, I had to separately render the background, separately render two boxes at a time, and I couldn't use chromatic aberration period. Every step of the way, Effects 20 crashed and I had to keep segmenting what I would render. This same video was previously done in early 2024 all in one project, plus chromatic aberration. No chopping things up into so many separate renders. I had to compile everything in Vegas Pro 20 just so I could get the video out. I had to apply an alternate effect within Pro 20, create a half-hearted second portion of the video, and separately render the 7 second intro.

BTW, I still have my old laptop, but it's in bad condition, although I believe the graphics card is still good.

What should I do to return my video editing process to a crash free state, or a near crash free state? Very desperate at the moment about it. Thank you.

Vegas Effects 20 is not a thing.

Vegas Effects began at version 1 and was discontinued at version 5.

Or are you talking about Vegas Pro 20?

Yeah, I'm talking about Pro 20, both the Pro 20 itself and the version of Effects that released around the time of it. Dang, I didn't even know Effects is gone!

Troubleshoot Vegas Pro stability by following this post. It's a bit dated but most is still relevant:

Hello again. I just rolled back to Windows 10 in order for Effects 4 to properly function. Most of the time, it does not crash now. However, Effects 4 is not reliable with exporting things. I'm creating a video with the same features as last time, 6 windows of audio waveforms, plus chromatic aberration and a glow effect. Effects 4 either crashes or doesn't go beyond 0%, so I cut it down to two audio waveform instances + effects. No difference.

I even tried creating a timeline cache just as a crapshoot, and even that stopped at 10%. However, crazy enough, it fully exported an image I processed with a flicker effect, custom lens flares, and a grain effect for the same 4 minute video.

There must be some way this nightmare could end.

And by the way, @NickHope, I followed as many of the steps you provided in your article and sadly I haven't see anything chance in Effects 4.
