Everyone,

Thanks so much for your postivie feedback. Just wanted to let everyone know I wasn't bashing Vegas I was just scared and frustrated at the same time. I know everyone on here has been worried at times when their hard work, that they have been slaving over for months on end just suddenly has problems. I hope I didn't offend anyone and I have been coming to this forum for some time and everyone and I mean everyone on here has been nothing but helpful and nice and for that I say thank you. I already have a thank you spot in my credits of the documentary to this forum for everyone who had lended help wether they know it or not.
As for the problem I am still working on it. This happened last year before Christmas and I was able to get it working again some how..I don't know. The power outage wasn't the problem. I just kept the program running because I was afraid I was going to have this application error again and when the power did go out and I tried to access it I got the application error. Somewhere on here someone else has ahd this problem and they claim they solved it by saving their document to a usb drive and loading that up on a new computer. On the new computer they deleted all the media they were not using saved it and reopened it on the computer they were working on and they had no problems. In this article they claim that they thought Vegas had a problem of not being able to read from too many hard drives/media storage devices as it caused Vegas to crash and cause this application error.
I get the application error everytime it starts to load the media into the timeline, which tells me, at least I think, that this is the case that Vegas is crashing becuase it has to read too much media. Is this true? How can I fix this or do I have to do as the other person did by saving it to a USB drive and putting it on another computer? Has anyone else had this problem?
I have indeed reinstalled the Vegas and it has done nothing to stop this. Trust me...I have done this numerous times. I have even contacted Sony and of course that is what they told me to do. Again, my intention was not to offend anyone so please do not take it that way.
I am not a computer guru or anything like that I am just a person who wants to make films so when this problem arises of course I am a bit freaked out. I have been working on this documentary for nearly a year in editing and a year and a half in filming it so I have a lot of time and money invested in this as I know a lot of people on here do with their own projects. Any help or suggestions will always been appreciated. I am goign to try and work on it tonight but time will tell I guess. Thanks everyone so much.

OK,
so Vegas itself appears to run OK, you can open other projects or create other projects and they run fine?

It sounds to me like the .veg file is corrupted and something in that file is causing Vegas to crash.

You could simply email the .veg file to someone to see if THEY can open it on their systems. If they can your project is fine, just something is screwy with your system, probably going to be a PIA to fix but it's just slog.

If the project cannot be opened on other peoples systems then you have a real big problem but lets not go there just yet.

Me email address is in my user profile. I do NOT want or need any of your media. It could be that one or more of your media files is corrupted and that may also be the cause of the crash but first things first. Let's see if we can open the project for you.

If you want me to have a go for you you'll need to email me first to get my email address and then you can email me your project as an attachment.

Cincyfilmgeek,

It would be helpful if you could share the exact error message you get for that may help pinpoint the problem better. But perhaps what follows may solve your problem since you seem to be saying that Vegas is having problems loading media: maybe it's the Media Manager itself.

What I am going to share is what tech support sent me which worked -- yes, uninstall, re-install, BUT it's NOT enough just to do it the basic way: one has to purge particular files also and reinstall .NET, otherwise, the reinstall will just put you back where you are now. I know, because that's what happened to me.

But before you try to do this, some background on my situation:

-- I had a problem with Vegas 6's version .d update and couldn't use Vegas at all .My error message included the mssql server error. Tech support told me that Vegas does NOT need Media Manager to operate. The Manager is a useful thing, but if corruption occurs, well, you know how it feels :)

Perhaps it would also be a good idea to backup or move your media files to a folder different from where they were at the time of the problem, then you can put them back once you've done the clean out.

Once you're up and running again, if your project doesn't know where things are, you can then tell Vegas to search for them once you put them back in the exact same place they were before this clean out operation.

..........................

Pain in the butt to go through this?

Well, a bit, but it worked, and it was such a relief to finally be back in the saddle again. We all know your frustration for we've all had something like that at one point or another.

Read what follows carefully and use your own judgment -- some stuff may be "duh" but other parts or even one part may perhaps turn out to be the key to the whole thing, so better to follow the instructions to the T.

Last but not least:

I am a fellow user, not tech support and thus use at your discretion. Since you didn't share the exact error message, I don't know if your problem is similar. But this clean-out is total, so it should work with your issue too.

Good luck and hope you're back in the pixel pushing saddle again soon :)

=================================================

----- Tech Support Instructions ------

I have included below step by step instructions on how you can go about this. The other option is opening Vegas and just disabling the Media Manager. It is not critical to the operation of Vegas for the Media Manager to be enabled and this would stop that error from showing every time you start Vegas.

You should use these instructions if you want to re-install the Vegas 6 update or the Vegas 7 trial.

The Media Manager is not critical to Vegas functioning properly. So if it would be acceptable to you, you can always disable this feature by opening Options / Preferences and under the General tab you can uncheck the "Enable Media Manager" function (which you can find third from the bottom of the list).

Otherwise, you can try uninstalling and re-installing the application. Below are some instructions on uninstalling and re-installing if you want to try a complete purge of Vegas 6 and do a clean install.

* Disconnect all USB and firewire devices from the system, along with all dongles.

* From Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs - Remove Sony Vegas 5 & 6 (and Acid 5,6 if those are installed), Sony Media Manager, Sony Sound Series Loops and Samples Reference Library, Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine, Microsoft .NET Framework (all)

* Delete these folders from your C drive:
C:\Documents and Settings\[Login Name]\Application Data\Sony\Media Manager
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sony\Media Manager

* Then go to Start / Run and type REGEDIT. Using the Registry Editor interface, navigate to the following directory: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Media Software. Within this directory you will see subdirectories for all Sony Media Software applications and their subcomponents. Please navigate into Shared Plug-ins and if you see Media Manager - delete that.

!!!Registry warning!!!

Note: it is always a good idea to backup your registry before making any changes to it. There is always the possibility of changing or deleting a critical setting causing you to have to reinstall the whole operating system. It's much better to be safe than sorry!

How To Backup, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=322756

* Re-Download the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, and Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
(http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/download/step2.asp?DID=493)

Save these files to your Desktop.

* Install .Net Framework 1.1 (dotnetfx.exe) and .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe) in that order. (Make sure that you have disconnected all USB and firewire devices from the system, along with all dongles.)

* Download Vegas 6.0d Build 210 update (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/download/step2.asp?DID=579).

* Restart

* Terminate background applications:

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del at the same time and you will see a list of the programs currently running (some users will have to hit the "Task Manager" button). Move over to the Processes Tab and click the "Image Name" heading at the top left of this window to view these items in alphabetical order.

Close everything showing on that list except for the items listed below. To end a process, highlight it and click the End Process button at the bottom of the window.

End every process except for:

alg.exe
ccmexec.exe
csrss.exe
explorer.exe
lsass.exe
MsPMSPSv.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe (there may be more than one of these, you can leave them all running)
System Idle Process
System
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
wmiprvse.exe

You may have other Users logged into the system and displayed on this list, but make sure you log them off and close down their processes as well.

* Install Vegas. To rule out as many variables as possible, it is best to install the program on your system (usually the C:) drive. Make sure that you do not have any external hard drives or dongles attached.

While all the stuff may keep you busy for a while, here is one more thing you might try/check. Unplug everything from your firewire ports. I get a similar issue when I have a DVR plugged into a firewire port. I unplug it from the computer and Vegas starts fine.

intel i-4790k / Asus Z97 Pro / 32GB Crucial RAM / Nvidia GTX 560Ti / 500GB Samsung SSD / 256 GB Samsung SSD / 2-WDC 4TB Black HDD's / 2-WDC 1TB HDD's / 2-HP 23" Monitors / Various MIDI gear, controllers and audio interfaces

First let me think everyone that has chimed in to help me on this problem. Next I would REALLY like to say thank you to Soniclight as it was you that truly fixed my problem. Thank you is not enough! Here is what is happening: It must be true that Vegas has problems reading too much media, especially when you have your project media over loaded with material one isn't using in the project, stupid me. This is what was causing the application error in Vegas. Here is how I fixed it thanks to Soniclight. I went into my media files and moved nearly half of them from my 400 gig harddrive and onto another hardrive. Once I did that I opened my Vegas project and low and behold it opened perfectly, no error. Next, I removed all the media I wasn't using and resaved the project. I closed the project down went back and moved all the media back onto my 400 gig harddrive reopened Vegas and again it opened without a problem. I than took out all media I wasn't using that I had moved and resaved and I am back running again...or as someone would say, back in the saddle again.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU, EVREYONE from the bottom of my heart and from my wallet...hehe. Good luck to all on your projects. Oh, if you want to check out what we are working please feel free to visit my website...If I am allowed to post that here that is.

I really want to know how many media files were in your project? Can you tell us?

Cincy, real glad you are back in biz. AND you now know how to correct an issue too.

That is priceless.

Glad to hear it all worked out -- and without perhaps having to resort to the full uninstall as I understand it. From my observation, the Media Manager is often the slowest part of Vegas sometimes, and so that's what can go wacky. Especially if one has a gazillion files.

I'd also suggest that you maybe save the message with the shared tech support info as a text file or html for it may come in handy some day. Ya jus' never know...

This interaction with you has also reminded me that, ahem, I'd better organize my stuff a bit better too. So far, no hiccups, but no point pushing the Olympian Gods and Goddesses of The Vegas Realm - lol.

--------------------

I also saw your trailer, very nice work! Which makes me that more glad I could contribute a little something to your endeavors through this thread. Hell, I contributed to the archives of U.S. history -- and an inspiring story as well :)

--------------------

On sharing clips here:

Of course you can share your work here as a Vegas user. I'm relatively new here but asked for some constructive critique at one point, and gained some great insight..
So I'd encourage you to share your work among fellow artistes.

That's part of widening the quality and brilliance of our pixel pushing obsession-passion :)

Last, a tiny aside:

I'm in a way "grounded" by some tooth/jaw problems and having to take antibiotics and Vicodin.. Due to this and other stuff, I aven't worked with Vegas or anything related in days.

But I figured that hobbling along or not, might as well try to be useful to someone anyway. Something I contributed helped you, your being helped makes this invalid feel useful. Win win.

--------------------

All that said, time to go. Pain's kicking up again, time to get another Vicodin.

Laurence mentioned that Vegas 6.0 could only handle 80 HDV clips - are we unlimited on Vegas 7?

Thanks if anyone knows!

"Laurence mentioned that Vegas 6.0 could only handle 80 HDV clips - are we unlimited on Vegas 7?"

In 7.0d HDV 1080 clip count is essentially unlimited- I can do 2000 (which will take a while to load - be patient and don't think the app has hung, just be patient while the project is opening or if you are adding lots of files to the timeline at once).

HDV 720 will still have a limit to the allowed open clip count (# depends on machine and a few other factors) but that is on the radar to address.

rmack350,

I had roughly around 2,300 files loaded in the project media. Hope this helps.

It's always nice to hear from ForumAdmin. It feels good to know the Sony/Madison folks are listening. :-)

As I said above, I liked the trailer for "Johnny" a lot. Once it's had a final pass on color, and maybe a film look, it should be great.

The only thing I thought looked cheap was the company logo, so I whipped up a quick one for you. It's by no means complete, but I didn't want to spend more than a couple of hours (including 3D and video rendering) because if you didn't like it I'd have wasted all that time. I'm not thrilled with the font treatment and I haven't worked in a film element (like you have with the strip of film) but it's not bad for a super-quickie. Let me know if you like it and would like me to finish it. Also, let me know what resolution you're working in.

Logo Test (2.7mb)

Cheers,
Fred

Fwtep, Thank's for the feedback. Yeah I know the logo looks cheap and yeah I REALLY like what you did. That is exactly what I have been looking for and if you would like to take a stab at it I would greatly appreciate it. The clock ticking works great and yes I agree about the font.
Yeah the trailer still needs some tweaking but that is not the official one. We are working on that now and will have it for release around late spring. We are planning on releasing the film on Veteran's Day of this year.
Again, great job on my logo and please work on it. Thanks so much.

Cincy.

OK, I'll get to work! I'll try to have a new version to look at as fast as I can, but I'm in the midst of moving, sooooo...

But I've got some ideas that I think will be pretty cool.
