Vegas+GigaStudio+Cakewalk

Hi.
I own Vegas Pro 1.0, GigaStudio 2.0 and old Cakewalk 3.0,
which I would love to have them all working together, since
they're preatty good for what they do. My Echo Mona card (4
in 6 out) has some problems with Vegas (the "Use a custom
bus routing" button in Vegas is missing, which is something
weird), but the main queston here is: Could it be possible
to sequence GigaStudio instruments with Cakewalk and
register the tracks into Vegas? Am I dreaming?

Dear Juan (of a kind):

Not only are you dreaming...you're having a nightmare!!!

What about simultaneously "sequencing" the tracks with Cakewalk using
GigaStudio as a sampler, sending tracks to Vegas, applying VST FX in
Vegas using Amulet VST adapter and having the mix routed to RexTracks
for a little mastering before converting files to Mp3 using Wavelab
and uploading the still-warm tracks to Amazone.com via CuteFtp
for immediate sale? All this while using Dialpad.com's free phone
service for some steamy chat with ex-girlfriend in Tijuana...

Hi Juan.

I'm using Cakewalk Pro 9, GigaStudio 2.0, and Vegas Video 2.0. I
don't do any syncing stuff between them. My recording process is
pretty simple. I write my MIDI stuff in CW using GS as my sampler.
Then, in GS, you can record to a WAV file. So one at a time, I solo
each track in Cakewalk and record them into individual WAV files via
GS. When I've recorded all my MIDI stuff using CW and GS, I close
those apps and fire up Vegas and just place all my recorded WAV files
into different tracks. At that point, I edit my project and record
live vocals or guitar tracks as desired. It works great for me and I
don't run into any syncing problems either. This isn't probably the
most professional way of doing things, but hey, it gets the job done.

Good luck,
Ron

There is something called the Sonic Foundry Virtual Midi Router. I
know you can use it to sync Acid to Vegas or vice versa but I'm not
sure about three apps. It emulates a midi controller and allows you
to assign virtual outs and ins to your midi sync settings in a
program. As long as the Mona can record and playback in two apps
simultaneously (multi-client audio), it should work.

Hi Ron, thanks a lot for the tip. I'm still smiling after reading
your post, you've just made my day.
Just one more question (an off topic for Vegas): How do you record to
WAV with GS?

Thank you again,

Juan

Juan,

There is a record button (red circle) at the top of the GigaStudio
screen. When you press it, it will bring up a small window. In this
window, you press another button (don't remember which one right now)
and it will ask you where you want to record the WAV file. Then,
there is also another button (On or Off) in this small window to tell
GS to start and stop recording when MIDI start and stop messages come
to it. In Cakewalk, be sure you have it configured to send Start and
Stop messages.

Then when you press Play in Cakewalk, GS will begin recording
anything you hear it play back. So, I like to solo each track in
Cakewalk and record each track to it's own WAV file so I can fine
tune things in Vegas. It takes a while because you have to wait for
each track to play the entire song, but it works like a charm. You
also have to tell GS to record a new WAV file and give it a new
name. However, each time I do this, each track is perfectly in sync
with each other. My songs don't usually go more than 6 minutes, but
even at the end of the song, everything sounds great.

By the way, I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.03, GigaStudio 160, Vegas
Video 2.0, and Echo Audio Darla 24 sound card. But, I was doing this
same thing with my cheapo Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card and it worked
too.

Hope this helps.

Ron

Hi Ron, I have the work done, thanks a lot. This is an excellent way
of working, doesn't matter if it takes a while to have all the tracks
recorded.
The GigaStudio issue is already done, but, how do you deal with
external sequenced synths sharing the same project with GigaStudio
instruments? I guess here is where Cakewalk 9 beats old Cakewalk 3.0,
doesn't it? Or could Vegas also respond to similar play/stop messages
from Cakewalk?

Juan,

Sorry I can't help you with that one. I actually got rid of all my
external sound gear and am relying only on GS to provide my sequenced
sounds. Except I record guitar and vocals using Vegas. Hope someone
else can answer that for you. I'm very inexperienced at the whole
sync thing anyway.

Vegas can only be started externally when slaved to MIDI Time Code.
Vegas does not slave to MIDI Clock or start/stop msgs. There is also
no support for MIDI Machine Control.

MIDI Clock slavery is not planned for a future version of Vegas.
Mostly because Vegas does not pay attention to tempo information -
there are no tempo maps in Vegas. It would be possible to just
trigger playback with MIDI start/stop/conitnue msg, but this would
assume that the tempo from the master would be constant and match
Vegas's tempo setting as well. While not completely useless, it opens
up a lot of potential problems.

We do plan on implementing MIDI Machine control in Vegas. This would
allow an external MMC Master to control Vegas's transport functions -
along with other aspects of the MMC control spec. It will also permit
Vegas to be the MMC Master and control external hardware/software.
