Vegas hangs on m2ts (AVCHD)

I've just tried importing AVCHD files, copied as m2ts to my hard disk via the HDWriter software that came with my Panasonic HDC-HS9 Palmcorder, into Vegas Pro8.

Every time I try to import them via the Explorer or Import Media Vegas hangs when the folder containing the files is opened.

I've tried copying the files to different folders on different drives from the camera but the result is always the same.

When I try importing them into Final Cut Pro on a Mac they transfer without any hitches. Mind you i can do that straight off the camera without any intermediate software but....

Does anyone have any clues as to what might be causing Vegas to hang on these files?

It's working correctly with DV capture and editing. Just can't get it to work with the AVCHD.

It sounds like a problem caused by problems in "m2tsplug.dll".

There seems to be a Vegas Pro 8c coming soon, which might fix your problem. If you like you can try a beta version of the "m2tsplug.dll". It seems to fix several problems.

That certainly solved the problem. I can now imort the AVCHD (m2ts) files that the HDWriter software from Panasonic transfers onto my hard drive.

It would be a sensible addition to Vegas that the intermediate step of using third party software to access the files is eliminated and Vegas directly imports from the camera and/or SDHC card.

I can do this with Final Cut Pro on the Mac. Downside with FCP is that the file sizes balloon out by a factor of 10 making a 100Mb file grow to 1Gb as it is converted to Apple ProRes and 5.1 audio is down mixed to stereo.

Vegas could maintain the file sizes and give 5.1, as it does presently while directly importing, as it should, making it a much better option.

Final concern is that when playing the files in a session set up for 1920x1080HD the replay was very jerky. I haven't looked at other options, project formats as yet.

I'm running this on a dual Zeon dual core 3.0GHZ computer which shouldn't have these problems... I've played files from an XDCAM EX on it smoothly.

Any clues on achieving 'normal' replay?
