vegas hangs system

win98
delta66
128 mg ram
PIII
2 20 gig disks (audio going to separate disk)

Vegas seems to hang a lot. Usually during recording,
although it does happen occasionally on playback.
Things just freeze up. I can sometimes do alt-ctrl-del
and end-task vegas and carry on, but more often is the case
where I have to reboot. There is no displayed crash info
to provide any sort of clue.

I've already relocated delta to a different IRQ.

At the risk of stating the obvious, this is enormously
frustrating. Any help would be grand.

I'm not all that familiar with the Delta66, but my guess is that we
might need a little more information so we can start narrowing down
the problem. First off, you haven't mentioned which version of Vegas
you are using (Audio,Pro,Video..followed by Version number), so you
might be running into a problem we all have lived through already and
we can lead you in the right direction. Vegas also requires Windows98
Second Edition as a minimum requirement, although I just lived
through this one and I would guess that, that is not your problem,
but I wouldn't omit that in trouble shooting. Other factors like
hard drive rpm speed, IDE or SCSI, what kind of video card you're
using and it's specs? What's your processor speed? Are you running
any plug-ins when it crashes? Are you generating midi Time code?
Older versions of Vegas use to hang on me when I would turn the Midi
Time code on. And driver numbers of your hardware, and have you
first checked into updating them? This is all useful information.

I'm not at my DAW right now, but you're right, I need to provide
more info. I do remember this much:

500MHz Pentium III
PC100 SDRAM 128MB DIMM
20.5GB EIDE HD (I have 2 )
GA620 Vanta 8MB (video card)
VEGAS Pro (version ???)
WIN98SE

Thanks for any insight.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA660 graphics accelerator card.
Here's more info on it:

DirectDraw 1.0 version 4.0
hardware exceleration == full
GDI Driver 4.11.01.0208
DriectDraw 3D 4.11.01.0208
OpenGL 4.11.01.0208

Also, I'm using Vegas Pro 1.5 build 208

I didn't asseble my DAW, but I think all the defaults for the graphics
card were taken. I don't paly any games on the DAW, so I doubt I need
some of the zoomy features. Does anyone have any experience with the
GigaByte 660 and how it should be configured for a DAW?

Just to recap, system hangs on playback and on record. Hang is random
and I can't reliably reproduce it, but it happens a lot.

thanks for any help.

I can't help you with that Video card. Is the video card an AGP or a
PCI slot card. AGP is much better for doing audio stuff, especially
if your soundcard is PCI based. If it's PCI based, then your Video
card and audio card might be fighting each other for PCI bandwidth.
If it is PCI based you might want to do things such as make sure you
don't have the "smoothing fonts" on, you might want to try cutting
your monitor colors down to 256 colors and working in 800x600
resolution. All these things will cut down on Video resources
battling over the PCI bus bandwidth. Have you gone to delta's website
and downloaded their latest drivers for your delta66?, I would try
this first of all. I'm highly doubting that you're having a PCI
bandwidth problem, seeing that you don't have a SCSI hard drive.
Those hard drives also, are they 5600rpm or 7200rpm. Vegas has a
minimum requirement of a 7200rpm drive. The version number on Vegas
Pro, I think you mean is v1.0b build 208, if that's the case, then
you have the latest version of Vegas Pro and that ran pretty smooth
the last time I used it, right now most of us have been battling with
some bugs in Vegas Video and Vegas Audio 2.0a, so you're actually
running the smoothest version of Vegas right now, 1.0b was rock solid
for me. Hope this helps

Turning the hardware exceleration on the graphics display
driver seems to have helped alot. Thanks to Steven Bell at Top Of The
Hill Music. I've only road-tested this for one session, but I didn't
hang once. It looks promising.

thanks
