Vegas instability on large projects

Unfortunately Vegas is failing me again when it comes to projects with lots of clips. I'm starting the editing of a corporate training video that has 611 XDCAM files. I'm having various crashing issues during editing as well as clips switching bins and other strangeness with project media management. Clips switching bins can be a nightmare when working with lots of files. I really did not want to edit this one in Premiere CS6 but off I go. Vegas has never been up to the task of editing projects with lots of files and I guess it never will be.

i've edited projects with hundreds of files in various formats but never of any of the new memory/compression intense ones. just HDV, DV, image sequence, image files, wav/mp3, quicktime & the like.

I have edited on far longer projects than what you are describing with more
varied formats of media than XDCAM's with no issues in Vegas.
As for switching bins, never seen that!
You mentioned you did not want to use Premiere, So good luck with that!
