Vegas Install Help

HI All,

I'd be really grateful if any one could help me with a install query with Vegas.

I'm building a new PC for HD capture/Rendering, the PC will be running Windows XPx64, Vegas x64, Black Magic HD Intense Pro card, 8GB RAM and 3TB set up with Raid 0.

I was going to install the OS and Vegas on a separate SATA drive but I was wondering would it be better to install the OS and Vegas on the Raid setup, would this make any difference to Vegas’ performance?

Thanks in advance for your help

Keep the RAID for your video files. You'll be accessing them all the time. Applications get loaded only once from the disk.

I'd also check carefully that all that stuff will run under XP64, officially Vegas isn't supported. V8.1 is supported under Vista 64.

I would put the OS and software on a separate sata drive.

The performance benefits of Raid 0 come with a price, if one drive fails you lose the whole array. I wouldn't put my OS on a raid 0 array. :-) I doubt it would affect anything other than the loading time and even that by only a couple of seconds.

Out of interest why are you going for XPx64 and not Vista 64?

I have been running Vista 64 for about a year now and since SP1 it's been excellent. Just turn off all the eye-candy :-)

Personally I would instal Vegas and the OS on the same drive ( boot drive) because once loaded Vegas is working from Ram anyway and isn't actually accessing the hardrive for the program software.

There wouldn't be any speed difference having Vegas installed on the Raid and I tend to prefer to keep my OS and program software on separate drives to my data (video and audio).

Keep your raid drive for the video and audio you capture and for rendering.

Thats Absolutley fantastic thank you all for the advice.

We havent got a valid licence for Vista at the moment, so XPx64 is the next best thing, would there be much diffrence at all?

Yea, XP64 is not supported by Sony, needs workarounds just to get Vegas 8.1 installed and after all that... it's a dead OS with extremely limited hardware driver support and no new drivers on the way. In other words, not much supports it and not much ever will. As farss said, since Sony doesn't support XP64 so you can't call them for support. That's not good if your in business. Vista 64 is the preferred 64-bit OS. I use it every day and I actually like how it caches applications to improve overall performance.

Also an extremely important note: there is currently no 3rd party support for Vegas 8.1. So if you use ANY 3rd part plugins, Boris FX / RED, Pixelan, proDAD, Neat Video, Magic Bullet, Velvet Matter, NewBlueFX, etc. you will NOT be able to use them in Vegas 8.1. All the more reason to go with Vista 64 and install 8.0c if you need to use any of these plug-ins.
