Bill,
Which motherboard and revision do you have on each?
When the computer crashed, did it change the clock's date? If so, did you reset it?

Again, If you could list your hardware for the troubled computer it would help. I've been stabbing in the dark, but at least I have guessed correctly at the OS and ATA controller so far. Still makes it difficult to guess at the rest of it.

Another $.02 worth -
I have seen really odd things cause problems, totally unrelated. Bad USB device. Bad modem. Bad video. (All should be unrelated but has happened.) Try a different IDE cable? Wouldn't be the first time I have seen a flakey, almost brand new drive. Even happens now with SCSI drives, and it nothing used to be wrong with SCSI's! Blame it on low margins, low prices, inadequate testing procedures. One out of 40 drives is bad out of the box or within a week for us.
Also, don't forget all the devices in your system are built to "tolerances". Lean all the tolerances one way or the other and presto - problems.
Only way to eliminate the drive is to replace it - bet the problem goes away. Even if you have to go direct to the mfg for the warranty. One reason to go with IBM SCSI's - 5 year (!) warranty.
