Vegas & Mono mp3 = garbage

farss wrote on 10/22/2006, 2:29 PM
I posted this in the audio forum some time ago but so far not a single bite, perhaps all the audio guys have turned into video guys.

Anyway here's the thing.
Encode audio to 128Kb mono mp3 and it sounds like garbage.
Encode the same audio to 128Kb joint stereo mp3 and it sounds like it should. Tried in V5 and V6, can't see much point in trying this in V7 as I doubt it got fixed there either. Well assuming it's actually broken. Can anyone repo this problem?

My souce file is 24/44.1K mono.

If we're all having this problem I'll log a tech support ticket.

Bob.

Farss, I know very little about mp3 mono encoding by vegas, but have you tried putting the mono on two audio tracks(stereo) and encode it to mono? Its probably a project setting maybe?

Bob,

Define: "it sounds like garbage."

I just tried a short music clip, source was 44.1 128k mp3, encoded to mono mp3 and it plays / sounds fine here (still using 6d). First time I've encoded to mp3 in Vegas, I went ahead and registered the codec.

farrs, Maybe a different encoder is getting used?

I just tried & it works fine for me too. Maybe something whent fubar on an install?

That's possible, I had to re-install Vegas just to get the codec to register without crashing Vegas.
However same material encoded to same bitrate Joint Stereo is fine. Encoding to 128Kb mono sounds more like 8Kb/sec.

The only odd things is I'm encoding from .pca files, I'll try again tonight with regular .wav files and see if that makes a difference.

In the end it's probably not a big issue as joint stereo should give the same results as mono from a mono source, I think.

Hi Bob,

I regularly encode mono mp3s at 128, but I do it with 256k set to mono. Check in the custom setup as well when you're doing it - if you change the saved templates, the bit rate sometimes knocks back to 8k. Just make sure that's not happening - it's easily overlooked but often happens.

Cheers

Phil

PS that sub-titling job I was talking to you about went really well! Had to get original files of FCP and as always it was a pleasure to show off Vegas to those FCP people. First time I've really used DVDA and that was a pleasure as well.

Phil,
thanks for the tip, I'll check it out again in the next few days.
Glad the job went well. Know what you mean about the FCP mob. Still have drool on the carpet from the last ones.

Bob, with all the MP3 encoders out there, I was surprised that you used the vegas MP3 encoder because of Sony disclaimer about commercial use of vegas MP3.

Ssshhh.

Or everyone will start worrying about it.

Now I promise I will not read the one about the Dolby encoder.

Whats a "Dolby"? Is that a rare dog trained to eat old Rock and Roll stage hands that will not the stadium?
