Vegas Movie Studio - Several Questions

I installed with Win7, and now it has expired... will reinstall next week. Assuming that has no bearing on this.

1) Ever since I began using the Vegas, I've had all sorts of "save-related" problems. On several occasions, I saved ( I am paranoid about saving... believe me, I did it!!) , then later, Vegas indicates that it cannot find the files.

2) Now, I am finding that I cannot even save!! At all! I get a message like "Unable to save due to error" or something extremely general like that.

3) When I UNGROUP all tracks (just a audio track, a video track and also text track used in some spots), and try to remove/delete JUST the audio/video and not text, ALL tracks are automatically highlighted. So, when there are three tracks at same place, how do I delete the middle of one of those tracks without deleting the others? Again, I am being sure "group" is not effective, as far as I know.

4) I did a search for "merge" and also "consolidate" and cannot figure out how to (after a satisfactory crossfade is made) merge two joining track parts (same track). This is a standard edit function, and I assume it is here somewhere.

5) I'd lobe to be able to to use a "nudge" feature... in 10 ms increments. How is that done?

Thanks for any help!

A limited reply but I hope it helps:

3. Have you disabled the Ripple button? I need to remember to do this every time I want to delete an event from just the single track when I press U.

5. Does pressing the Left and Right arrows do enough for you? (If you want to move a single frame only, press Alt at the same time).

Terminology ... "track" refers to a physical screen space that stretches horizontally across the entire project. You have 3 or 4 video tracks on top and 3 or 4 audio tracks below those. The items you put inside those tracks are not "tracks".

The items you drag onto the screen that contain audio, video, and text are called "events". We'll be able to communicate a lot better when we all use the same words. :)

1) & 2) Seem like severe system problems, not related to Vegas. Not that we don't want to help; we really do, but the answer lies outside of Vegas so it's gonna take a lot of diagnosing. Do you have similar problems in other programs?

3) Are all the headers of all the tracks highlighted? Press Shift-Ctrl-A to deselect everything first. This may show you that all tracks were selected. Now clicking on a single event should highlight only that one thing.

4) As pointed out above, i believe you're trying to merge two events, not to tracks. Vegas doesn't have this function, nor is it generally needed. With appropriate use of auto-ripple generally the events will never separate unless you deliberately choose to separate them. If you wish you can highlight both and press G to group them. This doesn't help much because any future grouping/ungrouping will override it, but psychologically you might feel good about it. Trust me though, merging isn't really necessary.

5) The help pages contain a wealth of information. Check out Keyboard Shortcuts / General Editing. You can move events left & right on the timeline 1 frame with the numeric keypad 1 & 3 keys or 1 pixel with the 4 & 6 keys. I don't see anything for specifying a time duration, but the duration of 4 & 6 will change depending on how far you are zoomed in. If you're zoomed out to see an entire 1 hour project o the screen then 4 & 6 will nudge maybe 30 seconds. If you're zoomed in far enough to see each individual frame then they can nudge in millisecond increments, assuming you have Quantize to Frames turned off.

OK, I am a record producer who is on Digidesign Pro Tools by trade. So "tracks" is my mentality. I need to learn the words for video I suppose.

Since this appears to be a major issue... what are the chances of a reinstall fixing the problem? Short of really making some major diagnostic moves... I am wondering if that will be a waste of time or possible solution.

Of course, at this point, my major problem is that I am not even allowed to save ANYTHING. Crazy!

Thanks for your response.
