Vegas, MPEG and Windows Movie Maker

A client has provided me with 3 animations with the .mpg suffix, but none of them will drag to the Vegas Timeline.

I have the Morgan Multimedia codec installed, but I don't think these are MJPEG.

As they all played ok in WMP, I opened Windows Movie Maker, put each on the timeline and exported them as DV avi, and these look ok on the Vegas timeline.

Any ideas why Windows Movie Maker can handle this while Vegas 8.0c can't?

What does GSpot say about the files?

What does Vegas say below the Explorer window when you select one of them? What does it say if you right-click one there and choose Properties?

Thanks - I installed GSpot and it says File is MPEG (.MPG/.MPEG/.VOB) and Codec: n.a.

In Vegas Explorer similar - below the Explorer window it just repeats the path and file name, and in Properties it just reports it as a movie clip, no other information.

Any ideas why Windows Movie Maker can handle this while Vegas 8.0c can't? If you do have "Use 3rd Party Codecs" disengaged, maybe engaging it will allow Vegas use the CODECS that you KNOW you have? It's worth a try?

Recently I dabbled with the Lagarith CODEC and now I can't remember whether I HAD to engage or disengage to allow Vegas to use it - or NOT!

Actually what makes a CODEC a 3rd party CODEC or not?

Grazie

If that's the 18th Preference under "General", Grazie, that refers to DV codecs, and funnily enough, I did have "Ignore" checked there, yet Vegas happily imported the DV avis I rendered in Windows Movie Maker, and I assume they didn't use the Vegas codec.

As I said, I'm happy with my workaround, but wanted to know why it was necessary.

* . . that refers to DV codecs," . . Douh! Of course it does. And what you have, aren't.

Still, and as you say, it would be good to know why not?
