When recording? Normally using a time selection. Do a search on "Pre-
Post roll", "Time Selection" and "Recording into an event using time
selection" in the Help file ... you should find what you need there.

Karl I realize that you are "help" boy, but it seems to me that this
person might have tried that and in the same amount of words you may
have been able to explain it instead of telling him to do what he
already has done. I myself don't get a clue from the manual or the
help files. I'd rather read a japanese to english translated synth
manual.

First, learn to read before you post ... there was clearly a question
at the top of my reply ... it was put there to elicit a response if
what followed was NOT in regard to what he was looking for.
Secondly, there is a diagram in the help file that answers the
question more clearly than words ever could.
Thirdly, why don't YOU answer the question instead of wasting space
taking me to task for at least attempting to help him out?

Looking back on your posts, you are not exactly a fountain of
information yourself!
>>I myself don't get a clue from the manual or the

Obvious, from your very first post.
The first place anyone should be directed to is the help files and
manual so as not to waste someone's time answering questions.
Try it. Maybe then you won't be so quick to take issue with someone
who has, and is actually trying to help.

Whoa...easy guys. I guess I should have made it more clear in my
original post, but the manual and help file just display a picture
showing what pre/post roll means. I knew what it meant, I just
wanted to know *how* to do it in Vegas. If I was looking for a
definition of pre/post roll, then yes, the help file pic would be
much better than words, but that's not what I need. Sorry for the
confusion.

Your question was actually answered (at least the way you asked it)
in that very picture that you call the "definition" ... besides being
answered in the second sentence of my original reply.
As I originally replied, you normally make a "Time Selection" to
determine pre and post roll times. :)
Furthermore, here what is stated in the manual:
"You may record into a selected event within a time selection. This
option allows you to add for pre- and post- roll during recording.
The time selection is adjustable to increase or decrease the pre- and
post- roll. During recording, the selected event's edges are the
punch-in (when recording starts) and punch-out (when recording stops).
That picture, IMO, is itself worth a thousand words. :)
In short, it is there in both the manual and the help file ... happy
reading.
Now, if you are talking about something else, you will have to
rephrase your question and be more specific.
Hope this helps.

Yea, I've checked out the help file. But I still don't understand
HOW to get a pre/post roll in there. I select the region I want to
punch-in. Then I enable recording on that track. Now, how do I get
a pre-roll? If I adjust the region, then that also adjusts the
region that gets recorded. Based upon what the manual says, as you
quoted below, I'm correct. Check it out: "The time selection is
adjustable to increase or decrease the pre- and post- roll." now,
this: "the selected event's edges are the punch-in and punch-out".
So if I adjust the time selection to accomodate a pre-roll, the time
selection edges also reflect the beginning of the punch-in. This
doesn't make sense to me - it sounds like I can't independently
change the start of the pre-roll and the start of the punch-in. I
hate to be a pain in the ass, but if you can do this, could you gimme
some sort of step-by-step? Thanks.

Try "Splitting" the Event that you want to record into, both
beginning and end (use your cursor to alternately select the start
and stop on the Event that you want to record into, then hit the "s"
key) ... then overlap that with a Time Selection to adjust your pre
and post roll on either side of that Event.
Just like the picture shows. :)

Thanks, I realize the picture showed it quite nicely, I just couldn't
figure out the actual process of doing it. I still don't know how to
do what you said below, that being adjusting the pre/post roll after
making a time selection, cuz I don't know how to insert the pre/post
roll to begin with. But regardless, I am a ninja - for I have
figured out another way. I did the split thing, like you said, for
the section I wanted to punch-in. Then, I right-clicked on the two
sections to the left and right of the punch-in section, go
to 'Switches' and then select 'Lock'. This locks the selections so
that cannot be recorded over. Then I just make my event selection
and record. Voila.

That will work, although it is sorta like walking around the block to
go next door. :)
I apologize ... I guess you must first know how to make a "time
selection".
One, of a half dozen, ways to do that is:
Left click on the "Marker Ruler" (the horizontal space just above the
Track View area) to the left of where you want to record and, while
holding the mouse button down, drag to the right, just past where you
want to stop recording, then release the mouse.
You have just made a "time selection".
See those little yellow arrows on the Marker Ruler on either end of
your "time selection" that point inward?
Adjust those puppies on either side of your Event for just the
desired amount of pre and post roll.
KAC ...
Robby Spears wrote:

Think of the time selection as playback time vs. record time and then
select the events you wish to record into as defining the record
time. Unselected events will not be recorded into.
In the case that you don't have any events to record into, but you
still want a pre/post roll, you insert an empty event first. Make a
time selection and choose Empty Event from the Insert menu. You can
now use it to define the record time and the time selection to define
the playback time.
maybe that's a clearer way of stating it? Maybe not :)

OK, I will. I don't understand the manual at all (though as you have
pointed out it is pretty). I select the track that i want to record
into then pull a "loop" section across the time that i want. Then
using crtl, left mouse I move the cursor to my start point. and press
record. This prolly isn't how it should be done, but the manual sucks
and I had to create my own thing. The way i do it however, mean you
don't have to open any menus and it's easier to start exactly where
you want. Then simply press ye olde auto cross fade button and expand
the wave file on both ends so that it makes a nice little "x".
Instant punch in that sounds as good as it looks. Ps, this might not
be what you wanted but can do some cool stuff using this method like
hacking out large sections that you don't want. SF please don't let
your programmers write your help only Karl will be able to understand
it and getting an answer out of him is such a pain. hehe
