vegas not playing when I hit play

HI all,

I have a very annoying issue with Vegas in that when I hit play often, nothing plays. It just sits there as if its locked up, and I can't move the play transport locater (like quick scratch playback) - it's just locked where it is. It's EXTREMELY annoying and makes me feel like I can't use the program - then at some point, bam, it starts playing. Does anyone have an idea of what this is, or what I could do to fix it?

What kind of footage do you use? If you are using anything apart of mpeg, mjpeg, mpeg2, DV AVI, Cineform and AVCHD, you are up for problems. For example, if you are use the .mov files from a Kodak camera, or .mp4 files, it will take Vegas a lot of time to read and display these files, because it's not optimized for these file types. So, what filetype are you trying to edit? And what CPU/RAM do you use?

One other possibility: Could you be using media on a drive that has gone into standby (power save) mode? If the disk spins down after being idle for a number of minutes, there is usually a pretty significant delay before it spins up again and can supply Vegas with the video files it needs. (My external USB drive does this...)
