Vegas not using CUDA

Dennis-McPeake wrote on 8/23/2022, 6:38 AM

I recently bought a new PC, but Vegas will not use the graphics card for rendering. In Preferences/ video tab/ GPU acceleration of video processing  –  it does not show the graphics card. It is just set to “off”. In Preferences/internal   -  It does not show any settings for the GPU.

However, in the customize template in the render settings /System tab/ check GPU  -  It shows CUDA is available, and in Render as/customize template/Video tab/ Encode mode  -  is set to render using CUDA if available.

Rendering is taking hours instead of minutes. How can I get Vegas to recognize the video card? My specs are.

Vegas Pro 14       Build 270

Processor            AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 24-Core Processor    3.79 GHz

RAM                      64Gb

Graphics              PNY Quadro P1000

OS                          Windows 11 Home edition.

@j-v Sorry missed that bit

Vegas Pro 13 was the latest version with that CUDA option.
That option made also many mistakes in renderresult, I think one of the reasons that option is not available since version 14.
Do you really want faster and better renderresults with the help of the GPU you have to use the program beginning at Version 17.
The latest version 20 is the newest and you can try it out for 30 days. Available at the Magix/Vegas website

Preferences File I/O is not shown.

Latest drivers are installed for Quadro P1000

Not happy about having to get a newer version of Vegas. I will loose all the Boris and New Blue effects that came with version 14. Also do not want to pay monthly.

Which versionnumber?

Why do you think so. I see the New Blue effects installed in VPro 14 also in VP 20.

Also do not want to pay monthly.

Not needed, the Edit versions are the full versions without all kind of extra's.
If needed you can upgrade to VPro 20 Edit for the upgradeprice of $119

VEGAS doesn't require monthly subscription... however, that graphics card is too weak to handle newer versions of VEGAS effectively. You won't get the full benefit of the new GPU acceleration that VEGAS offers. The rest of the system is solid, but you need to upgrade that GPU.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Do I really need a newer graphics card? It might be cheaper to switch to a different video editor.

Yelandkeil wrote on 8/23/2022, 3:26 PM

You needn't!

As you have your source to buy a new PC, you surely have source information to switch to another editor, too.

Follow your instinct and tell us how's the life there later. 🍻🍻🍻

“Do I really need a newer graphics card?”

It’s a good idea to buy a new graphics card every five years whether you think you should or not.

When I got my RX480 in 2017, it was a boat anchor on Vegas Pro 13-453. It came alive with Vegas Pro 15 and the performance has improved through Vegas Pro 19-643.

Forget CUDA.

Your GPU is one of the main components that does the heavy lifting in video editing... no matter what app you use, it's going to want you to have a good GPU in order to have smooth playback, especially with modern codecs or any kind of effects processing.

A Pascal-era GPU with 4GB of ram [link] is basically the minimum for other software like Resolve as well. I wouldn't expect amazing performance from 2016-era hardware.
