Is it possible to run vegas on Mac ?? I have just purchased an Ibook G4 and would love to continue to use vegas audio...I have spent the last year and a half learning it and it is only now that i feel comfortable doing everything that I need to do when recording,... Thanks Tucker
I suppose you could try running one of those PC imulators, but I think you're limited to 2in/2out, via the MAC sound router. The real question is, why did you buy a MAC if you're using Vegas? Kind of like buying a Ford and trying to drop a chevy engine in it. Yes it can be done, but everything won't fit to spec.
The main reason is I got a really good deal on a laptop. an extremely fast laptop...I wanted to get a laptop because I do a lot of touring and had no other way to record on the bus (except my 4 track) I wanted to become more mobile...4 space rack and laptop!!!!!!!!!!! ohh well I guess I will find another recording platform for the mac!!!! Thanks
Ok first of all, It is not really your concern what I spend my money on ! It is not a waste , I was hoping to use it for some recording while on the tour bus..I haven't been able to find a pc laptop that is very stable or reliable.... And I think there is no reason to bust a gut to the fact that SF do not develop for Mac..It seems to me that the two formats are growing closer together.. and every studio that I have ever recorded in has used Mac and Mac based software for both recording and mastering... To me it is a shame that a great company like SF are eliminating themselves from the Pro field...All the information that I have read and everyone that I have talked to about it, says that Mac is a much more stable machine....I find this to be a pain in the ass to have to look for something more stable, and I really wish that I could use vegas on the Mac.. But if I can't then fine, I will continue to use it at home on my Pc...So laugh on all you would like ,but as I said it is a shame that SF can't take part in the Mac world and that the pc world has so many glitches....Just telling the truth!!!! Tucker
When you buy a system, you start with the app you like to use. Then you buy the hardware to serve the purpose. Unfortunately you did it the other way around.
You obviously aren't pro, or else we wouldn't need to tell you that PCs are used in professional AV situations all the time. I just used mine to produce animated station IDs and accompanying audio in Flash and have them rendered to digibeta for a TV station.
I work with Mac users who crash more than I do. Why? Because they're artists who don't know how to maintain their machines. It's knowledge, not plaform choice, that makes a machine stable.
Contrary to your statement, I'm not busting a gut because SF doesn't develop for the Mac...I'm laughing because you bought a Mac and want a known PC-only company to suddenly change philosophy to fit your needs.
You blew money on the 'Mac is better' myth, and now you're eating it. But maybe you can still sell it and get a good PC laptop...good ones cost a lot but it's worth the investment if you like Vegas. That's what I would do anyway. Cheers, DE

Tuck,
If you think that using a Mac suddenly qualifies you as a pro, you are extremely short sighted and so is your so called career. I work in a pro environment everyday and we don't have any Macs - and we do a ton of professional work. As far as stability goes - don't even go there. My workstations are tuned and ready for anything at anytime. They do not crash and I also get to use very cool software like Vegas to make my job that much easier. There isn't a Mac app that exists that can go toe to toe with Vegas for sheer speed and efficiency. You must know that too - or this thread wouldn't exist, now would it?
You are showing too much of your hand my friend. If Vegas rocks your world like you say it does - then get with the program and get a PC.
Tuck,
If your having problems with finding a laptop to use for Vegas go to:
http://store.pcnirvana.net/ and talk to Earl Foote. He builds pc's for audio/video and can sells laptops "tweaked" to be used for a/v. He understands sofo products greatly and I've heard nothing but the BEST from people who purchased machines from him. [I will be purchasing one in the near future]
1. Sell that mac based laptop
2. Buy one from there [running XP home] and use ALL sofo products with it.
3. Be happy!
This whole mac vs. pc debate is really tiring. If you want to shoot yourself in the foot go ahead... I'm getting my work done on my "non-professional daw" every day with nill a complaint from any clients...my .02cents.
The 'pros' who don't know better, or have already committed themselves to Digidesign systems based on relatively ancient-history turnkey sytems, do not realise that they are just dicky-lickers to the suits who created the 'Mac is for creative people' myth. Or maybe they do, which is why they are so insular.
Most, if not all PC laptops today are every bit as stable as Mac ones.
Hey I've got an idea - maybe Apple could change to Intel so we can run SF apps on them !
There's a version of Mac OS that can run on the i386 platform. Evidently there always is, but it's not available to the general public. If you want to see something scary, read a post on getting a Mac to work. Oh, I forgot, Mac's don't screw up.
"If you think that using a Mac suddenly qualifies you as a pro"
Of course. I guess with his argument then people like George Lucas are not pros since they produce multimillion dollar movies with PCs. And to imagine the studitiy of him using PCs for filming, digital effects, filiming and post production.
I never said I was pro for using mac!! I asked a simple question ,there is no need to bash me for buying a mac ! I still use vegas at home on my pc and I enjoy it greatly...I got a great deal on a mac laptop and I took it..if it ends up being for internet and dvd watching while on tour ,fine....I needed a laptop nontheless...I tour about 9 months a year (that is what makes me pro ! haha) ..It is a shame that I can't use my favourite program on the laptop ,but ohh well....It is funny how suddenly I am an idiot in some of your eyes for not agreeing with you...
I posted here because it is a knowledge base ,but it became a bashing session, so the thread should end...Thanks to the people who gave thier .02 cents without people rediculously pompous !! Tucker

Tuck,
Well what does this mean?: "every studio that I have ever recorded in has used Mac and Mac based software for both recording and mastering... To me it is a shame that a great company like SF are eliminating themselves from the Pro field..."
So how is SF eliminating themselves from the Pro field? By NOT making their product available on a Mac? Jeez - sounds like what you said. Or am I wrong?
Look - I don't really care about your Mac laptop. I just get a bit annoyed when someone pops in with a question that should have a known obvious answer and then after someone does make a valid suggestion for you, you decide to rub our faces in it by basically stating that because we use SF products, we are not Pro.
You sound like a good, knowledgable guy. You like to use Vegas. That's cool..but in all your travels thru all those cool studios you seem to hang out in - have you ever seen Vegas running on a Mac? I mean cmon...why even ask the question...you state that you are around this stuff enough to know better.
"I mean cmon...why even ask the question...you state that you are around this stuff enough to know better."
Agreed....As far as I'm concern, a truley "pro and commercial" studio would never limit itself to one platform whether it's a 2 inch, ADAT, MAC, PC, Atari, etc.
May be you should check out the pc emulator. For editing jobs that probably may work fine - - but rendering may be slower. May be render as DV and then, use a native renderer to convert to other formats.
Actually, I was asking in referance to the emulators..I think one is called jaguar. I am not too sure, But anyway ,what I was asking was if anyone knew if Vegas could be used on a mac (with an emulator, or otherwise) I had no intention of pissing anyone off ,including myself..as for the pro question. I was refering to studios that I have been in, and yes I have been in a lot ,so what , sorry if that bothers anyone. I think I came in with a valid question and it got turned around to be a debate about mac or pc. I never intended this at all..But I stand behind everything that I said ,a lot of people have told me of the benefits of Mac , and I have recorded ,and mastered on Macs and I was impressed, both by the software and the machine it's self... But again ,I think the choice between mac and pc is beyond the point. I have learned a lot on this forum and I am sure I will continue to do so in the future. As I have said I will still use Vegas at home...Thanks again, and if anyone can tell me about the emulators it would be great ...Thanks Tucker
