Vegas price

After giving the Vegas demo a spin I can say that it's
another outstanding S.F. product. However, I think it's
much too pricey for what it does. When you consider that
digidesign's Digi 001 includes a PCI audio card, an I/O
breakout box, and Pro Tools 5.0Le for $900 or less, it's
hard to justify Vegas' price. I've been informed that the
win98 Pro Tools software is ready to go, and with respect
to Sonic Foundry, anyone who is familiar with Pro tools
knows it's the best audio editing system available. I
really like Vegas, and would be glad to add it to my
arsenal if the price wasn't so out of whack.

If so I think you should take a closer look. I do not believe the
product bundle you mntioned does multi-track video editing with the
ease that Vegas Video does.

Maybe I just misnderstood you though.

I'm refering to Vegas Pro (as a multitrack AUDIO recorder/editor) not
to Vegas Video :)

Pro Tools LE and Digi001 is a fine out-of-the box system if it suits
your needs. But I'm reminded of the Digi sound byte "One Solution.
One Company." If you don't like the Digi001 or the Audiomedia III,
well that's tough cookies to you. Vegas Pro supports most any
Windows compatible piece of hardware you throw at it.

In my mind, _these_ systems are a bit overpriced for what you get (or
don't get), like a 24 track limit, no .asf or .wma support (you pay
extra for mp3, too), no DirectX support, no video support, etc.

Oh, and they've been developing for Windows for how long? (Sorry,
Digi-supporters, that was a cheap shot.)

OK, that's enough out of me. As a non-marketing type, I'm not the
best person to discuss price points with, so I digress.

Please be sure to try out the newly released Vegas Video beta on our
website. All the functionality of Vegas Pro (and then some) plus a
complete video editing and compositing solution.

Regards,
Jason.

Jason,
I'm not interested (at this time) in the video aspects of Vegas. If
Vegas Pro is all about video, then what the hell is Vegas Video for?
I know for a fact that the Win98 version of Pro Tools is a reality,
and coming much sooner than you would like. Right now it only works
with AudiomediaIII, but i imagine that a "native", non-hardware
version like the Mac ProMix ($230), could follow. After all, Vegas
proves you don't really need all that DSP hardware. I'm not trying to
pick a fight. I think SF is the best PC audio software company,
period. I have ACID and love the shit out of it, but Sound Forge, as
solid and feature-laden as it is, blows for editing music. The
cut/paste/clipboard paradigm is a joke at this point, and your
competitors know it. It's too bad you had to make your first "modern"
multitrack/audio editor (Vegas) an over-priced "multimedia do-all"
affair.
The introduction of Vegas Video makes you guys seem a little confused
yourselves.

I apologize if we seem video-centric lately, but that's what has been
on our minds lately . Regarding what you consider Sound Forge's shortcomings, could you elaborate a bit or give an example of the paradigm you have in mind? Also, which competitors are you speaking of? In our minds, we left out a lot of unnecessary baggage from Vegas Pro that burdens our competitors. We also concentrated on ease of use and performance. As a practicing musician myself, I feel that Vegas beats the pants off other software only DAWs in these areas. I'm sorry if you disagree. We try, but we can't please everyone. Good luck on your future endeavors with whatever solution you decide on. Regards, Jason. Bruce Swanson wrote: >>Jason, >>I'm not interested (at this time) in the video aspects of Vegas. Jason,

Your marketing techniques will be the end of your reputable name if
your not careful (pass it on....cause others already have).

I paid $600.00 for this program...months after it came out. I do
like it - eh it crashes from time (with one of your now available
"bundle packages" no less - I won't mention the name but it sounds
like BIDIMAN TELTA 1010)

When it works it's a good app....but it's waaaay overpriced. Now we
can buy it for $399.00...where's the remainder of my overpayment? ;)

Now I see your Vegas Video Pro....??? what the hell?

Why isn't SF working out the kinks in Vegas Pro 1.0b before releasing
the inane VVideo pro? Shouldn't THIS be a download for Vegas owners?
"It's got all the features of Vegas...and then some".

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat the hell? How CORPORATE is that?

SF marketing plans:

Ok consumers (cause that's what you are...our cattle), now that you
purchased our Vegas Pro 1.0 for some ungodly CORPORATE
amount.....we'd now like you to bend over as we cram your improved,
CORPORATE, re-packaged version of your original product straight up
your bumper.
But that's not all.........you'll pay that ungodly amount AGAIN!!!

Great eh?

Can we get some answers on this?

..but I will give it a shot.

Joe,
I honestly don't think anyone here has the attitude that they want to
rip off anyone or treat the customers we have like cattle. I'm sorry
if you have that impression. I'm no marketing goon but I hardly
thinkthey could be much different then the rest of us, considering
how Sonic Foundry lives.

As far as the price drop. I do Quality Testing here so I don't get
to help SF make pricing decisions but from my expereince with
software in general, there are few titles that do not drop in price
over time-- particularly as you approach the release of a new
version. That's just economics. You have old product on the shelf
and you want it moved before you release it's replacement. I don't
have a problem with this when I buy a car, a video card or fruit at
the Farmer's Market so I don't see it as an unethical or 'corporate'
method of mistreating customers. It is just a way to try and move
product that will be near impossible to move when the 'latest,
greatest' comes out.

I really don't know how to answer the rest of your post-- there seems
to be a fair amount of angst buried in there that I don't know how to
deal with. Let me be honest with you though-- I really don't feel
that SF will be really 'corporate' in the 'suit and tie'
or 'everybody fit in' sense for a long long time.

I guess I didn't really give you all the answers you wanted but some
I can't answer, others I don't know how-- I did my best for you.

I've been looking for a video/sound editor, and all the full-featured
ones are in the $500-600 range. I'm considering biting the bullet
and shelling out that kind of money for one which actually works, and
so far the Vegas Video beta has impressed me. But, this thread has
me a little nervous - I can't find the price you're all complaining
about, and I'd really like to know: What's the planned retail price??

Jerome,
This was a hard one to get an answer on, partialy because they have
not settled on a price yet. But I got a start point for you: The
official workd at this point is that a full featured Vegas Video 2.0
will be sub- $1000.

Unfortunately, I have nothing more specific. Nor do I have any
information on how much Vegas Audio will be or how much the various
upgrade paths will cost.

Speaking of which there is more information on the upgrade path and
how this product line will be structured in the works as we speak---
the information should be should be brought to light reasonably
soon. We are hearing the questions you guys are asking here and
making efforts to get you answers. Thanks a lot for participating in
the forums-- it has helped us see what we forgot to make clear to you
folks.

PS- Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, J.

I got a good quote on the price of Vegas 2 just now. It may change
but this is currently the answer they cooked up for us.

1. What will the price of Vegas Video be?

So Jason,

More to the point ... what is the upgrade price to be
for the majority of us red haired step children in this forum who
care naught for video and only want to upgrade our beloved Vegas Pro
to the "Audio only" version of Vegas 2?

I certainly hope that we are not going to have to pay $200 for ver 2
barely eight months after ver 1's introduction?

You will have to pardon my angst ... being a dyed-in-the-wool SOUND
guy for many years, my color blind eyes get glassy when I hear the
word "video" ... and I get tremors when I think of the way I and my
brethren have been treated down through the years by those who stare
at color TV monitors all day mumbling mantras like "cold"
and "register" and "color phase". :)

KAC ...

Thanks for the info, Jason - I realized it would be difficult
to produce concrete numbers this far from the release date.
I'm wondering, though, what the upgrade path/pricing from
my Sound Forge XP 4.5 would be ;-)

What about a FREE upgrade to Vegas 2 or Vegas Audio or Vegas Video Or
Vegas Whatever?
