Never had a problem with Vista 64 bit. It suffered because the new drivers were not available. Win7 works well because they eliminated trying to work with old stuff which Vista would suck up if you had the drivers/compatibility mode. The differences between Vista and Win 7 are small but you still had to buy new stuff to work with Win 7. (motherboard, Video card, extra memory) That's my very limited experienced opinion which sometimes is clouded by emotion.

>> Windows Vista never was a viable OS

Rubbish. Vista had problems when it was released due to Microsoft chaning the driver model in the 12th hour, making it impossible for vendors to release drivers in tandem with Vista. It also had one or two stability problems. From SP1 and onwards it was rock solid (I used the 64 bit version) and performant. Windows 7 is slightly more performant, but I woudn't say it is more (or less) stable.

Funny. Windows 7 is basically identical (with some tweaks to privilege escalation) to Vista with a souped up interface. If Windows 7 is wonderful to you, Vista would have been equally wonderful with a few tweaks to UAC.

recently installed Windows 8 and behind the colorful large button interface, is the standard Windows 7-ish desktop setup AND functionality. One bypasses the pretty Win8 button front by clicking DESKTOP

Feels like I just bought Pro11... is there a very reasonable upgrade offer for Vegas from Sony?

They usually have reasonable upgrade offers.

As I decided to skip a version with Vegas 11 (my old PC didn't have a Cuda enabled GPU), I wouldn't mind seeing the upgrade in the next half year.

However, I do feel that Sony should fix the current bugs in Vegas 11. Or make Vegas 12 a (nearly) free upgrade for Vegas 11 owners.

In Vegas 10 I already had some stability issues and. Most likely due to inefficient coding (prolly to preserve compatibility with 32 bit mode), as my upgrade to new hardware (I7 3700k 16GB memory and a 600 series GPU) solved that issue. As such I have high hopes for a 64bit only version.
