Vegas Pro 13 burning to Blu Ray stops mid-way

hometechnc wrote on 6/9/2014, 11:29 AM
Hope this is not redundant (my first post here). I have a 33 minute video shot with a Canon HF G30 (that I love), that I have tried doing a direct burn to blu-ray using the Vegas Pro 13 310-build, tools - burn blu-ray disc.

The video files are AVCHD, 1080p 60 (frame rate), 28mbps. I had no problem using the burn tool for a standard DVD, but when I attempt a burn to blu-ray, it gets to anywhere from 36-74% rendering progress, and then just stalls, (even overnight).

Have tried a couple of different settings... same results. There are no special FX's other than a few fades here and there, and a few still images on the front-end of the video.

This is my first, and disappointing attempt to burn a blu-ray... please help if you can.

Don't think it's my hardware... Custom build, Win 7 64bit, i-7 3.5ghz, 16gb ram, Nvidia GTX-680 card...

It could be your CPU is overheating. Do you have enough space for the render output? Have you tried to render and use DVDA instead of the Vegas build-in option?

thx... just tried again, stopped at 48% of render.
have liquid cooled cpu, which was running at abt. 92% while rendering.
Have over 80gb free space on my SSD.

I just thought that since Vegas Pro 13 has the option to do a direct burn to blu-ray, it should work as advertised (just paid for the upgrade!).

found an update for my GTX680, and updated just before this last attempt... whcih failed. Also, once it stops rendering, I have to "force quit" Vegas Pro.

and it might sound stupid on my part, but so far, I have not been able to figure out how to use DVDA. so little documentation came with it, and I have not found much instruction via youtube, etc.

Thx!

Which codec are you using for your BluRay render, Sony AVC or MPEG-2? Did you enable rendering with GPU or CPU only?

At the risk of an obvious question, have you downloaded the DVDA 6.0 manual from this website - under 'Downloads'?

There might just be enough information in the 230 odd pages to help you.

Old Smoke... thanks, I checked in the prefernces / video, GPU acceleration of video processing: is enabled for my video card.

And I was using the default Sony AVC codec for rendering.
and had used a few different templates; 1920x1080-60i, 8mbps stream, up to 16 mbps stream... etc. they all stopped rendering mid-way.
OldSmoke wrote on 6/10/2014, 1:04 PM
Try the Mainconcept MPEG-2 BluRay template. It also can handle a higher bitrate then Sony AVC. Is there anything special in your timeline at the point the render stops? Any special FX, a scrolling text are something else? If you can, use driver 334.89 with your GTX680; many have reported issues with later drivers. I also recommend installing a CPU temperature monitoring software, something like RealTemp just to rule out overheating.
Worst case, try switching off GPU acceleration for Vegas and the render codec.

thx Old Smoke.. I will try the Mainconcept template. and nothing special when it stops, which is at a different point each time. And I was using the 334.89 driver when this started, and then updated to the current, with same results. My CPU is water-cooled, but will monitor temps on the next attempt. And then, with all of this happening, I used it as an excuse to order a Sapphire R9 290X 4GB GDDR5 card.
We'll see if that makes any improvement. Thanks again for all your input.

Dag .. this is frustrating! Ran Realtemp while attempting to render this video, using the Mainconcept template this time. Looked promising; the render rate was noticeably faster, the CPU temps were averaging 50-54 C., the CPU load averaging 98%. Then at 74% render, the Vegas screen went black, and the CPU load and temps started dropping... indicating that rendering had stopped.
If I place my mouse cursor over Sony Vegas, the busy circle is spinning, and my temps are not dropping below 42-44 C., and 25-26% load still showing. Not sure what is going on?
hometechnc wrote on 6/11/2014, 9:51 AM
appreciate the suggestion dlion... but how can I use imageburn, if I can not get the video to render?

..and BTW; I just finished eliminating several adaware threats with AVG, even after un-checking the ad options! (and qucikly un-installed imageburn.

Use G30 (1080 50p) this end with no problems. Don't forget that to burn a 1920x1080 BD you need an interlaced file. The alternative is to resize to 1280x720P which is a BD standard
After rendering check the format of your file.
If you have DVDA then there are good tutorials available (free) from Sony which take you through the set up. Use the manual for reference. If you provide DVDA with the correct file types it will burn without re rendering.
Have found DVDA falls over burning but an iso made with DVDA and burnt using imageburn works every time. Take care installing imageburn a load of crap goes in if you fail to uncheck some boxes.
If you are new to BD start with rewriteable discs.

my raw video for this project is 1920x1080-60i. The problem right now is that I cannot get the project to render. I was trying to do a simple burn to blu-ray disk, under tools in pro 13. It quits rendering mid-way through.

I just tired doing a Render of the video only, using mainconcept MPEG2, Blu-ray 1920x1080-60i template. It quit Rendering at 74%, same percentage as attempting the simple burn process. So... I cannot even get it to render the project.
OldSmoke wrote on 6/11/2014, 12:44 PM
@hometechnc

Did you try rendering without GPU acceleration? My usual BD projects are 1hour of 1280x720 60P and I have no issues with it; not in VP11,12 or 13. I still think something is overheating in your system, it could even be your RAM.

Edit:
Try rendering a region around the area where the render usually stops, maybe there is something wrong with the clips in the timeline in that area.

A couple of questions:

Is your source media all residing on local drives? Is it possible that footage at the failure point is on a drive that has spun down (asleep)?

Have you tried rendering your project in sections to an intermediate format? Or even tried rendering the areas where failure occurred, if it's a consistent stopping point?
hometechnc wrote on 6/11/2014, 1:10 PM
thx... I had moved the source files to my main (SSD) drive a few attempts ago, so that's not it.

I have rendered the very same project for standard DVD with no issues.
and it was only the last two times it stopped at 74%. Before that, it happened at 26%, 51%,etc.
hometechnc wrote on 6/11/2014, 1:19 PM
not yet, but I will try it w/o GPU this time. And there are a few mentions of rendering 1280x720p, ...are you referring to the HDV 720-30p template and upping the frame rate to 60?

I don't understand the premise of this if the native resolution of Blu-ray is 1920x1080?

And again, thanks... I will cut my vid down to that are and try rendering.
OldSmoke wrote on 6/11/2014, 1:42 PM
I shoot in 60P; depending on the camera, older ones only do 720 60p but all my new ones are 1080 60p. However, there is no 1080 60p for BD, only 720 60p. This applies to projects with fast motion and the results are so much better then 1080 60i. BD has a couple of different formats that are possible, you can look it up on the internet but you can also check the project properties in DVDA for BD and you will find 1280x720 60p; it is as "native" as 1920x1080 60i. Yes, the resolution is smaller but trust me, even on my 55" HDTV you can't see the difference but you can see how smooth 60p is. I am waiting for 1080 60p to become a valid BD format aside from 4K :-)

Edit: You can use a 1920x1080 60i BD template and change frame rate and size too.

Render stops rendering. Maybe instead of rendering the whole timeline you try doing half at a time. If only one half completes try splitting the none rendering half in half again. It may be a problem on the timeline and this process will allow you to track the problem down.

Your processor is water cooled so I presume you are overclocking. If you are reset the clock speed down to default and try rendering again.
To date I've not experienced overheating using stock speeds with standard fans.

Just trying to eliminate problem areas.

System specs might just help us resolve your problem.

Thanks Old Smoke; this my first attempt to authoring a Blu-Ray DVD. But if what you say is true.. there being no 1920c1080 for BD, then why does the drop-down menu in Vegas Pro 13 offer it, in several forms? Guess that's why I'm confused.

Thanks diverG; rig is not overclocked, I've built several custom rigs and just wanted to try out the cooler, which works quite well.

The last three times now, it has stopped at 74%, which I guess means something.

I am not sure which drop down menu you are referring to, in the the project or rendering template? 1080 60p is playable on HDTV's via USB or other media but a BD player can not play it and you can't make a BD that is 1080 60p; at least not to my knowledge.

Old Smoke; the drop down: file / render as / MainConcept MPEG-2
there are nine different Blu-ray templates, 3 of those are 1920x1080 templates.

Being the novice, if a 1920x1080 is not going to work... why does Sony put it in the offerings?

And btw, I just attempted an HDV 720-30p render... it stopped at 74% as well.
it's 2014, it just should not be this complicated, (maybe I'm being naive?)
Once again, thank all of you for your time... I think I'm just gonna shoot myself and be done with it.
OldSmoke wrote on 6/11/2014, 8:08 PM
Oh no, 1920x1080 does work, but only interlaced not progressive. You can make 1920x1080 60i (the "i" is for interlaced) but not 1920x1080 60p (the "p" is for progressive). 60p means 60 progressive frames (in fact it's 59.94 which is 2x 29.97 also called double NTSC). 720-30p means 30 progressive frames and I wouldn't convert 60i to 30p and then put it on BD, it's rather for the Internet.

No reason to shoot yourself but you have to be a bit more methodical. Try to narrow down or zoom in on the problem and take some of the advice you received here. Have you tried rendering a loop region that includes the area where the render stops? Have you tried switching off GPU acceleration?

On rare occasions AntiVirus programs can cause problems too.
