Vegas Pro 14 (Build 211) When starting up program stops working

Katelyn wrote on 3/4/2017, 7:07 AM

I have just installed Vegas Pro but when I try to open the software it starts loading but then freezes while it says Initializing VST plug-ins and comes up with message Vegas Pro has stopped working. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I've tried running as administrator nothing seems to get it to work.

My computer is a windows 8.1 64bit, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700HQ CPU @2.40 GHz, 32GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M. When I looked up the system requirements for the software it was my understanding that my specs would work with this software.

I could greatly use any help you can give me. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Temporarily rename your VST plugins folder(s). Locations may include:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Vstplugins
  • C:\Program Files\Vstplugins
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\Vstplugins
  • C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins

Then see if you can restart Vegas. If you can, go into the Vegas Options > Preferences > VST Effects and see what your Default VST search folder is. It's probably one of the above. Then re-create that folder and start putting your VST dll files back into it, restarting Vegas in-between, until you find which VST(S) is/are causing the problem. Then leave those files out of the folder.

...Yep, some of MDA series plugins do cause such an effect.

Nick Hope I appreciate your quick response. Sadly when I went to the places on my computer you mentioned above I could not find any folders with those names. Is there any other place they could be located at that you can think of? I very much appreciate your time and wish you a wonderful day!!!

Maybe C:\Steinberg\VST\ or C:\VST\

Do a search in Windows for folders named *vst*

Do you have any VST plugins on your system that you know of?

There are tips for troubleshooting failed startup here, but they don't specifically cover VSTs. Might be worth a look though, if you don't get anywhere with hunting for VSTs that might be causing the problem.

Yeah I did a vst search. I can up with several in my adobe after affects, photoshop, premiere, media encoder folders but no where else on my hard drive. Those have been there for several years though and they say nothing has been added to them recently. I followed your trouble shooting guide before I first posted here. Did pretty much all the stuff on it but one or two things I didn't understand. Does the software come with its own vst files? Or could it be my adobe ones are messing with it? Thanks again for your time. Look forward to hopefully hearing from you.

Does the software come with its own vst files?

None that I know of.

I'm running out of ideas. My only thought is that you find out where Vegas' "Default VST search folder" setting is stored and modify it.

Presumably this setting is in the Windows registry somewhere. Unfortunately when I search my regsitry for "VSTPlugins", regedit hangs (I don't know why), so I can't tell you where this setting is. I also don't know what it is by default. Maybe you could search your registry for that, or someone else could try searching for it for us.

If you find that setting, maybe you could temporarily modify it to an empty temporary folder that you make and see if Vegas will start. Be very careful when using Regedit as you can really mess things up there. Set a Windows System Restore point before you do it.
